Their original coder couldn't move to London for the 5,000 dollar donation money bought office space so thry had to get a new one that didn't know hoe to eork the previous ones code foundation and as a result almost everything from beta had to be cut.

Does the game actually have anything to do besides collecting different colors of dirt?

Collect dirt and a bunch of furniture.
Build random shit with that dirt.
Fishing.
Recruit a bunch of personalized/random NPCs for your ship and houses you've built.
A handful of established quests and instanced missions that you do once and never need to bother with again.
Randomized escort/kill/fetch missions from NPCs you find at random.
1.4 adds more thorough hunt/kill missions where you may have to investigate an area and talk to NPCs to find the location of your target elsewhere.
Randomly found obstacle courses and instanced dungeons with a boss at the end to give you access to an endgame forge.
