I'm pretty sure crunch time and animation have always gone hand in hand and cookie cutting is a thing since the times of Oswald the Rabbit. Maybe it's 'cos during Nihon's bubble economy there was a stupid amount of money being pumped into animation, which meant producers were more willing to take risks. Also while the bubble burst in the early '90s, right afterwards you had a butt load of mangaka and animators willing to work for even less peanuts than usual.
This is just my boomer take on things, though.
