Seconding Dwarf Fortress, playing a brown spider man, stripping goblins in their sleep, biting them and checking back on them in a few hours to see all the grotesque symptoms was some of the most fun I've had in games. Also wielding 6 shields and 2 weapons is ridiculous.

that's the entire point of adventure mode, to be whatever you want and do stuff while not being a dwarf or tied down to worrying about building a settlement
although there are mods that let you play as other races in the main mode
