It's weird how Kirby 64 doesn't have any spirits at all, even though it's one of the most popular Kirby games, especially in Japan. Even Brawl acknowledged Kirby 64 through a few stickers. Granted I do not think there is any way they would sell her separately as DLC, so I think her only options are if they suddenly decide to add more characters to Ultimate for free, or potentially in the next game, whenever that is. The problem is that might be another 10 years from now and she may have fallen back into irrelevance by then, in a repeat of what I call "The Krystal dilemma."

I'll level with you, I have only played a little bit of SMRPG, like I got Mallow in my party and there were Shy Guys bouncing around all over the place and that's the last thing I remember doing. But if Geno gets announced I will immediately start playing his game that day and finish it by the time he's out, just like I'm doing with Banjo-Kazooie, although the difference there is that I did play both BK and BT when I was a child but I never finished either of them, probably because they were rentals, but at any rate at least I had a deeper connection with that one. I feel bad about not having played SMRPG though because it was one of my friend's favorite games and I have had many opportunities to but I never got around to it, which is especially ironic because Paper Mario actually is one of my favorite games ever and that is a game I have played from start to finish and done basically everything in, so by all rights I should have gotten to SMRPG a long time ago. But still, I want Geno in, in honor of my friend and because he looks cool and because I'm sure I'll enjoy his game whenever I finally play it.

Plans can change, as indicated by the fact that this guy didn't specifically name the Dragon Quest hero, and it would just be strange for them to release Edelgard in Smash six months after the release of her game. That wouldn't be very good advertising. Granted I suppose it's entirely possible that this could come with like, the announcement of some Edelgard-focused expansion pack or something where she's the main character, in which case they sure are betting heavily on her being popular before her game is even out.

Ridley is the main antagonist of a series that has been dead for almost a decade until recenty, K.Rool has been completely fucking missing of the DK franchise for over a decade and don't even get me started on BK.

I mean, I'm a huge Genofag but at this point I think it's pretty clear he won't be getting into Smash. It just doesn't really make any sense for Square to do it is the problem. With Banjo-Kazooie, there's the whole Microsoft cross promotion stuff and I wouldn't be surprised if they'll try and revive the series. But with Geno? It's pretty doubtful that Square's gonna make Mario RPG 2 or sell the rights back to Nintendo, and why would Square ever go with Geno over Sora or Lara Croft or Neku? Hero got in because Square wants to Dragon Quest to grow into the west, while Nintendo wants to sell XI and also, if they success in surpassing it's sells on PS4 at the very least, convince Square to keep the franchise as a Nintendo standard from no on. Cloud is a character that will always sell, and in past DLCs, like Noctis and 2B, was a matter of shill. Square doesn't even sell toys of Geno (something that Microsoft at least do with Banjo), so there just don't have interest in the character, and whit the number of IPs they have, there will always have more profitable deals to make with them, from the point of view of Nintendo. Quite literally, the only changes Geno will ever have, is if Square and Nintendo ever make another crossover game together, and Geno comes back as one of the main characters, otherwise, there is little profit to get out of him.

Hey, better than paying $60 for 7 and the stages. Believe it or not this game is actually less greedy than 4 was.

Considering how long it takes between each character, I'm actually not THAT against the idea of paying $25 a year for new characters in a game I love. But I also understand that it's implausible for them to keep making more characters because it takes a lot of time, because not only do you have to make the character but you have to balance them against over 70 other fighters, bugtest them on every little stage and mode and so on. So I'm not actually expecting any characters beyond the 5 they announced. If there's more, it would be a nice little treat, but you know what? I got Banjo, I got Cloud, I got K. Rool, I got Inkling. I'm happy. They could add two more Fire Emblem characters and this roster would still be great.

consider the following: each dlc fighter has to bring with them a batch of new spirits to be added to the game as part of the whole fighting pass deal (you get a new fighter PLUS a new stage PLUS new music PLUS new spirits, ... you get the gist)
so i'd say that a probable newcomer who already has a spirit in-game, and maybe a bunch of others from the same series too, is 90% pretty much deconfirmed

What does Square Enix gain from letting Geno in as a playable character instead of an high profile IP of theirs like Nier or Chrono Trigger? Microsoft at least still sells Banjo-Kazooie merchandise, and a collection with their old games, and might potentially make a new game some day which would benefit from the newfound exposure of the duo. You might see Geno appearing in a new Fortune Street or Mario Sports game eventually, but being in Smash doesn't make any sense under corporate logic.

The only way I'd ever see this changing is if Nintendo straight up bought the rights to Geno, and considering that Square knows he has some fan demand, they have every reason to ask for a lot of money. If they even want to sell the rights. Plus, people really do underestimate those merchandising sales. Think about this: Smash 4 DLC was not internally confirmed until summer 2014, around the time the 3DS version was wrapping up development. That's why Mewtwo and Lucas still had trophies, they didn't know they were going to continue making fighters for the game. Smash Ultimate had DLC confirmed in January 2018, long before the game deadline. They finished negotiations for characters in November 2018 while supposedly some files for Plant and Joker were at least dating back in September 2018. Which means Spirits may not be a hard deconfirm but the odds are heavily stacked towards that conclusion especially since they kept Piranha Plant's spirit out of the main game. If Geno was coming why did they even bother giving him a Spirit?

The thing is, that didn't stop 2B from being the guest character in Soul Calibur 6. It seems like Square is happy to have this character make guest appearances in various games in spite of the unlikelihood that she'll ever have her own game again, because she is just such a remarkably popular character in both the east and the west and probably makes them a shitload of money with her mere presence. It's ironic because this is actually comparable to Geno in that she's a character who only ever had one game and will probably never have another but could continue to live on through crossover appearances, but in this case it could actually happen.

But I suppose if it never happens, the fact that Geralt and 2B can fight each other is still amazing in its own way.
