I would argue that it's way more important for Sony and Microsoft to focus on it than Nintendo. Nintendo is guaranteed to have its own games because of it's own studio, but Microsoft and Sony's libraries are so similar, all it takes is one or two exclusives for me to get one system over the other. I wait a few years on getting an Xbox or PlayStation for this reason, I almost got an Xbox One but got a PS4 instead when Microsoft was porting all of their exclusives.

Games have competition regardless of whether they're exclusive or multiplat. If your product is good, there's no reason to keep it exclusive to one platform unless you're being paid by said console to stay exclusive. The only exception to this is if nobody buys the console you're on to begin with, which typically isn't an issue today unless you're the Ouya or a weebgame exclusive to Xbox for some terrible reason.

The benefits exclusives DO provide is that it's an incentive for the console's publisher, not the game's, to fund games that normally would not have been funded. Even then that's not a benefit of being stuck on one console itself but rather a shitty bribe. It's only a few steps less shitty than Epic ripping games out from other stores to brute force control over a market.
