The ports look substantially worse than the original PS1 version and have broken music, in particular ruining one of the biggest scenes in the game. They're all based on the crappy PC port from 98 which ran on basic Direct3D graphics, which means most visual effects, shadow, particles and so on don't work.

Anyone considering playing this game: Do yourself a favor and emulate the PS1 version on RetroArch if you can't buy the original on console.

The songs themselves aren't the issue. The problem is they are timed wrong. There's the looping bug which is only fixed in the Switch version, but more importantly, the game's biggest reveal scene (the one in Cloud's mind near the end), which is supposed to be timed to the main theme of the game, is no longer synced to the music.

The graphics are still obviously the bigger issue though. And if you want sharp models, you can just emulate it while keeping the visual effects.

Not to say you are wrong, but its been a long time since I've played a few of them, and there are a few I've missed out on more recently, so I don't know any that I would say are void of exploration. As pointless as the exploration may be, even Breath of the Wild has a shit ton of exploration. The worst I can think of might be Spirit Tracks, and while it is a horrible game, it still has some exploration, and yes its linearity is a bad trait for it in the year 2019 or any year for that matter.

The entire game has 45 minutes of cutscenes. The only cutscene longer than 5 minutes is the ending, which is only 10 minutes long. Not only are none of them 20 minutes, but the fact that you can't sit still for 5 minutes, and a single time for 10 minutes, is pretty fucking pathetic... Have you been checked for ADD/ADHD yet?

Some people can recall a lot of detail from their early life, with the 3rd year being often the earliest point where their "self" kinda awakens and start recording shit up properly. I only remember some bits and pieces, while some folks I know were practically like 1st graders at that point. The more shocking / unique the experience, the more vivid the memories will be.

FFVI's opening credits are so good. If they ever remake it in 3d I worry how they'll ruin it.

I hate how this game has terrible sound design.
No footstep sound effects...especially when Cloud is walking on metal surfaces. No ambient noise of any kind. It feels way too quiet with just the music playing and the world feeling dead due to no other sounds whatsoever.

Not sure if FF8 or 9 had the same problems.

The only thing I'm mad at is the dolphin-tail. Other than that her design is great. The leggings put more emphasis on upskirt glory.

While that might be one reason, the bigger blame would be the fact that some bits and pieces of trivia and exposition you may indeed MISS if you don't explore actively.

The design is bad from all angles imaginable. One, theme. ZR is a design used for schoolgirl characters. Is Tifa a schoolgirl? No. She's an adult. Two, composition. Spats, sports bras, and gloves are sport gear, better fitted for a sport-themed outfit. Thigh highs and pleated skirts are day-to-day gear, better fitted for everyday, feminine outfits. The two together don't work. It's liking trying to mesh two outfits together. Third, characterization. Tifa is depicted as a very practical person in the story, her tank top and skirt are probably what she has at hand. However, the tank top and pleated skirt serve no purpose anymore, since she has spats and a sport bra that's bigger than the top. A new outfit true to Tifa's character would have spats and sport bra only together with the gloves and boots. Hell, it would have yoga pants and sport bra. The socks, pleated skirt and tank top are merely fashion choices, they serve no purpose. Three, color scheme. Black is out of balance now. There's too much black to too much white. This is where the AC outfit conquers the new one. There was a right amount of black to the right amount of white, giving her a black based design. The original outfit reigns over them both though, giving the contrast of black from the hair, skirt, and long gloves to the white based Tifa. The red in the gloves (now gone), together with red from the boots and hair clip bring her eyes into evidence. Overall a much more pleasing design to the eyes.
And that's why the design is bad.

Final Fantasy is my favorite series and 7 is my favorite entry. It was the most defining game of my early childhood. Everything about the remake looks to be goddamn perfect except the episodic aspect. I'm sorry but if you are butthurt about Tifa's clothes you are impossible to please.

On top of openings, I feel like FF's crystal theme music is one of the best designed pieces for a menu before starting up a grand adventure.

Fair enough. X was solid but it was the first foray into full 3D and it's kind of awkward. Great game, honestly the best turn-based combat in the series, but overall I would put it one step below 7-9.

12 was like...really good, but it feels like they do a lot of weird shit in the series and then after a couple titles come back and do a "traditional" FF and that's what 12 felt like.

If you're at all curious about it it's worth checking out, just temper your expectations because at first it really does seem like it's going to be a fantastic FF and by the finish line it's more lukewarm.

The car isn't that bad honestly, the game kind of tried to act like a giant love letter to the entire series thus far so you can listen to all the soundtracks from the other games while you ride.

Obviously that's a very subjective matter, but my vote would go to the "Yes" side.

However, there is a few catches you need to be aware of. It's not an even ride at all.
Just about every single game in the FF series is its very own closed entity. Every game has its own story, world, cast, even gameplay differences. The "connecting" elements are often superficial details and re-occuring themes, enemy or attack designs, etc.
Sometimes they throw an easteregg or reference to other series' games, but seldom do they really build upon those nudges further. The big exception are these few "true sequels (ie. FFX-2, XIII-2 & LR, FF7: Crisis Core & DoC.. ...), that do expand the universe and plot of the "OG game".

Because of all this, you really do have to get your hands dirty and actually TRY the different games. The fanbase will never cease to argue which games are great and which are shit, simply because different designs appeal to different people.
However, out of the classics, IV, VI, VII and IX are arguably the most beloved games by the most fans, and the ones I could easily recommend to anyone.
Out of those, I'd say FF7 is still a safe choice for a beginner. It was a huge phenomenon back in the days, and it's still very enjoyable, atmospheric and even comfy game. The gameplay-mechanisms are simple enough for rookies, but hard enough to master, soo it keeps even experienced players interested. There's also tons of optional side quests, minigames, etc.

After that, choose your poison! I for example really liked the FF XIII trilogy as a whole, but I know that many bash it as the worst blunder of the millennium and death of the series.
The ones I would personally recommend skipping are the NES originals (1-3) and the MMOs (11 & 14). I also wasn't too fond of VIII and XII.

This thread actually got me interested of figuring out what the hell it was that's bothering me with Tifa's new design.

In short, it's the black bra. Namely how it frames the entire white shirt from top to bottom, making it look like some kind of a vest. Removing the black color from the bottom of the shirt already improved the new design's balance a fuckton.

Next, I realized that there's barely any of the classic's red highlighting colors that her gloves, shoes and even her ribbon used to provide. Just a hair extra of that sweet crimson dye brought more of /myTifa/ back to the 2020's design.

Finally, her legs really need more meat. Those sticks ain't gonna do much kick-boxing.
I left the stockings in for now, just for the heck of it.

As for me, I just wanted to say while ignoring political reasons, the new design for Tifa is just over designed. Its over saturated. I would have been fine with about 5% of those changes, but its just too much, and too many. I would have kept the changes to the hair tail, and the more detailed skirt, and the black belt. But that's it really. The glovers are too overly designed. Same for all the shit on her arm. Just the bangle pad on her arm would have been enough. Also, the leggings look stupid, and make her shoes look like snow boots. The black undershirt is too much, and if there really was a reason for it, they should have lengthened her white top more.

More to me like someone got carried away. I guess since these are the designs you will be seeing the entire time in midgar, they wanted it to be more stylized? Maybe they were embarrassed with how simplistic the old design was? But they kept Cloud's old design the same pretty much, and its not nearly as stylized as Tifa's is. I am afraid of seeing Yuffie's new design now, even though I know it won't be for another few years. She had a very simplistic design, I can see her being fully clothed with design shit all over her arms and legs now.

Confirmed for not having played the game at all. You do not need to do any battles to get Vincent at all. You just talk to him before you enter the library, and talk to him after meeting Sephiroth in the library, and he then asks if you will meet Hojo and decides to tag along since then.
