I've never seen anyone who thinks the game is good say why, whereas plenty of people can point out it's flaws.

It's just a really well done high fantasy JRPG series that play the genre completely straight. The stories are simple and to the point, the battle system is what you expect, and the graphics and music are very charming and fit perfectly.
It sounds drab when you describe it and yet it pulls it off so well. It's the Super Mario Bros. of JRPGs.

The premise is always the same: “big bad is doing the big bad, go save us all”.
The games are each their own thing but in some there’s real loose mentions or connections between them. Nothing that would degrade the experience though. It was made to be an easy franchise to get into, with any game (except 6 and 7 which suck).

Erdrick is the hero of Adelgard, the world from the first three games, and you play as him in the third game. In the first and second game you play as his descendants. The name is passed on to the DQ11 protagonist for story reasons.

They do not all take place in the same setting. DQ1-3 and 4-6 are trilogies that each take place in their own separate universes, as do 8, 9 and 10 individually.
11 is about dimension hopping.

It's THE classic JRPG series that everyone else rips off from. Some of the games take place in the same settings. Erdrick is a bestowed name but in general use refers to the protagonist of Dragon Quest III.
The games are the image of generic JRPG but instead of experimenting or being ambitious, the series has just refined its design for decades. The difficulty curve and progression feels great, your tools are all useful instead of you being stuck with status effects that don't affect bosses and aren't useful for generic enemies, the stories are timeless and always flow well despite few big surprises.

I wish Toriyama kept his more cartoony proportions. The famicom/nes versions of I-IV and VII have my favorite art in the series. The more "meathead" style of art where everyone has muscles just isn't anywhere near as charming.

Might as well play VI if you've never touched it before, then you can say it's the worst just like the rest of it. Murdaw is fucking hard just so you know when you get to him, and if you're playing the DS version be aware the SFC was even harder. Unless you grind way above where you're meant to be, the actual way you beat him is have someone use the fire gauntlet (use it as an item, don't equip it) and focus on keeping your party alive until he dies.

Honestly I feel like the supporting party members from 4 and 3 (or their designs anyway) are way more iconic than any of the heroes.

The party members in 4 definitely get way more love than the hero, but basically the entire tiara and tunic design combination originates from 3. It bled out into other game series and people still design anime characters around the 3 hero.
