as much as i'm an idiot myself, even pixel indie crab still requires optimization so that they won't be a performance hog. the simpler ones are minimizing any form of action that isn't shown on screen by pausing the script until you 'see' them.
walls should function as a barrier that prevent the visibility to help with the optimizing, like staring at the hallway with multiple actors interacting will slow it down because of multiple clause of script running and models that were rendered, while staring at a short-distance wall will increase your performance because the script is 'paused' until you take a look at it once again.
further optimization such as removing script artifacts and not rendering model you don't want to look at can also increase the game performance.

Graphics are vectors written in code. The closer your written code, code in a language like python or C, is to Maschine code, the Series of ones and zeroes, the quicker it runs. The quicker a code runs with given hardware the better it is written. So if you solve your runtime problem to the point your code runs in a given polynomial runtime the more optimized it is.
Im sure an computer science user can rectify that if it was wrong.

in general be smart with your assets. if a part will never be visible (like rooftops in some games) then don't bother including them at all.
yanderesim runs badly because xephon is a bad coder who has NPCs running expensive checks every single frame for no reason at all. he has no idea how to write a hitman-esque npc routine system so all his npcs can follow their schedule without tanking performance.

Sure, your high-level code that relies on interpreting strings will run slower than some low-level code that has the actual values in bytes, but if your original code ended up solving a problem in cubic time (O(n^3)), it won't be reduced to quadratic time (O(n^2)) in the equivalent low-level version.

If you want to learn how to program, the best way to learn is to find a language you are interested, and start working on tutorials, and make some softwares, but if you want to make games, find an engine, and make tutorials and copy other games.
Don't make the same mistake I did, don't try to develop an entire game from scratch without knowing how to develop small games, work on small games/prototypes before that, if you want to make a shmup, create a simple shmup, if you want to create a pattern system, create a pattern system, if you want to make a platformer, make platformer, if you want to create a real time combat, create a real time combat, this small games will improve your skill in the long run.

Don't fret shit like RPG Maker, Ren'py, and GameMaker Studio. Find a simple concept that you want to work with and try to implement it with those tools. If they don't offer you what you want, move on to a similar engine. When you feel like you've got a hold of it, try moving on to Godot, don't diverge too far from your original concept. Then maybe do Unity.

If you want to make 2D games, I would go with Godot, if you want to make 3D games, go with Unity, Unreal, Armory3D, or Urho3D, is not like Godot don't support 3D, but, it's not good at all. You can also look for some API and learn programming, like Ogre3D or SDL, but, requires more patient than an engine.
For your first game, I would recommend pong or snake.

Pretty much, there's no reconciling the two concepts, you either get freeform murder shenanigans and character narrative be damned, or you walk a rigid path leading to a couple of optional methods to deal with specific rivals, you can't have both in any sensible way.
Trying to marry up these concepts is probably one of the things that helped drive his progress to a grinding standstill.

When the project was fresh, all anyone really wanted was anime highschool Hitman, that core idea is gold, he's just heaped 10 pounds of garbage on top of it.
it's like a turn-based tactics game with a bunch of number-crunchy RPG elements and a form of loot run game where you're supposed to draft a best possible build using goofy ass abilities you find in a big dungeon.
at the moment it's pretty scuffed with placeholder graphics and unfinished GUI, and there's only really an endless survival mode in a singular debug map, but i hope to add like a dungeon crawl overworld element to it and a lot of other stuff like that. it's already fairly playable, but i'm going to work on it over the summer before i put out a free playtest build
but hey it runs at a better framerate than yandere simulator

It's been almost 5.5 years since he started this project, and we're only about 80% until we get the first rival. Yandev claims that the other rivals will be much easier to add since they would use a lot of the assets from the first rival, and he wll have an actual kickstarter up. But he is mostly doing things on his own so of course it's taking a long ass time. This game's entire purpose is for this Alex (Yandev) guy to prove that he can develop a great stealth game mostly on his own and improve his reputation so he can secure a more lucrative developing position.
Is this game even good? Seemed pretty cookie-cutter to me when I saw the demo years ago.
What do you suck at? There are trillion of optimization guides out there assuming that's what you're talking about. Make sure to look for generalized optimization tricks first.

Properly programmed, a game with the graphical and internal script complexity of YS would run well on hardware from a decade ago, it simply isn't that pretty or sophisticated enough to warrant the horsepower required.

In this day and age programming is not very important. What you really need is an original vision for gameplay, good writing, and good art. Any pajeet can program the game for you on some framework then. Just look at notch and toby fox, the two most successful indie devs ever. Programmer here. In a release build, switch statement will be most likely compiled to a jump table or a dictionary, both faster than a long if-else chain.
In some cases, switch statements can end up being compiled to if-else chain, but usually, that would happen only if there are not many cases in the statement (below 7 I believe).
The debug build will produce if-else chains for switch statements for debugging purposes, but you're not supposed to release the debug build.
The biggest downside of long if-else chains is the code maintainability. You can stomach a few of them when they're needed, but a whole codebase consisting exclusively of them is unmaintainable and very hard to expand on. The same thing applies to switch statements. They are better, but only slightly.
YandereDev shouldn't just be replacing if-else chains with switch statements. Most of the time he should be using other features and structures altogether.
