Ignore the summaries, or half-truths. The crux and core of Gamergate was very, very simple.

It was the boiling point of years of tensions between gaming journalists/critics and the people who actually play and pay for games.

It's never been a secret how incredibly unprofessional the industry is, and how many journalism sites are basically just another marketing arm for the publishers, that's been known forever. Reuters specifically avoided working with/on the game's industry because they considered the quality of journalism to be so below par, it would damage their integrity.

Over time a shift happened though, however, it wasn't towards more integrity or more standards, it was towards a growing amount of critics/journalists who were dismissive or downright contemptuous of people who actually play games. The Polygon's of the world, who look down on the regular saps and decry about how game should be art.

That's where you get famous headlines like "Gamers are dead. Gamers don't have to be your audience anymore."

That tension was building for years, and the clickbait nature of the internet only made it worse. Making articles that insulted your audience so they'd come get mad at you was big business.

The 5 guys fiasco (a girl fucked 5 guys for reviews/exposure, because games journalists never used to ever put in disclaimers about personal connections) was just the tipping point. It was the Franz Ferdianand of the internet. It was always going to happen anyway, this was just the powder keg that finally made it explode.

What people don't understand about Gamergate was that it wasn't the event itself that really triggered it. All that it was at the start was it being found out that an indie games developer had been sucking dick and fucking games journalists for favorable reviews. People started talking about it and making fun of it, and that's all it would've been had it stopped there.

However, all of a sudden, practically every games forum and website in unison start banning any discussion of said topic. Including this place, where previously you could freely discuss virtually anything at all, and when all topics regarding this started being banned, the userbase freaked out and revolted en masse.

There were nonstop threads all over and the moderators were banning it and users left and right, and eventually GG discussion got moved to /pol/ as a bandaid solution. Then mootykins started adding scripts and stuff to fuck with the /pol/ board because he was so mad about the fact no one would let it die, plus the fact everyone had started memeing on him hard since they blamed him for the censorship, which triggered ANOTHER mass user revolt and the eventual exodus to infinity chan by a portion of the userbase. This whole chain of events was also what finally prompted m00t to sell the site, as well.

So yeah, the whole thing happened essentially because dumb moderators across the web as a collective social group decided to ban all discussion on a topic which triggered everyone into a frothing rage.

So every 7 years there is a cataclysmic raid that ruins Yea Forums culture and reshapes it into something new. We are about halfway to the next shitstorm right now. Most of note 2021 happens to be when the next president will be inaugurated. The current internet culture has been festering pretty bad so I am sure around that time we will see something even worse. The way things are now normie social media has been dragged into the warzone more than ever, whatever happens next will not just happen here but will become a full blown culture war.

They want to write fluff pieces for their friends' shitty indie games, hit pieces on people who piss them off on twitter, and smear pieces on games they despise. The only time they ever want to do journalism is when viewership drops off to the point where no one wants to read them anymore: IE Jason Schreier and Kotaku, who does journalism about once every five years and bitches and moans about Japanese games being evil the rest of the time.

If you aren't in the clique, you're never writing for Kotaku and Polygon.

2) Write your own site.
Writing your own site is fun and educational. The problem is you will never have an audience. Your audience depends on getting eyes from other sites, and those sites will do anything they can to keep you from being successful, including targeting your payment processors, your ads, and anyplace that even mentions your name. The first step will be to group you with the alt-right, and there will be nothing you can do to stop that.
Case in point: OneAngryGamer was literally just some fucking guy who started a blog and started writing about shit he saw in the industry, and now he has traffic that rivals Dailydot. But his stuff is also considered worse than hitler, even on Yea Forums. The screamers, moaners, and resetera refugees will never let another article from that place be posted ever again, meanwhile Yea Forums is caked in polygon, kotaku, and dailydot articles.

So yeah, those are your options. If they suck, then that's why no one else has tried. You're essentially breaking into a captured market full of oligarchies who protect one another.
