NetHack is probably the only good roguelike out there. Have tried Rogue, ADOM, DoomRL and Angband but they were all basically trash.

In the original context, it was so you actually proved mastery and didn't just brute-force memorize everything. In modern context (Roguelites), it's a stupid attempt to extent "content" in most cases. There are games which absolutely benefit from it, but they are almost entirely games like Binding of Isaac/Nuclear Throne/Spelunky which are purposefully built around it as a component of design instead of simply a way to give more content.
