As much as I love stylized graphics, the crazy brightness BOTW has doesn't do it any favors. Add sub-par hardware and it's a choppy, artifacted mess. I'm not a graphics person but while I was playing BOTW many sections made me fucking uncomfortable, it just looks so bad. Some regions were easier on the eye but the really bright and colorful zones were atrocious.

I also find it weird how some of the animals were very realistic and while the enemies looked like simplistic plastic toys.

That said, I don't like the bottom fox either, looks like a botched taxidermy

Both BotW and Red Dead 2 were great games and both did things well with their respective open worlds. Both games are visually enjoyable, obviously RDR2 is more impressive in its detail and scale. But BotW has its own visual style, great draw distance and has a clear and colorful aesthetic that suits it well.

I really liked BOTW, especially exploring uncharted lands. It was pretty vast and empty and I didn't like shrines (just put a fucking NPC with a fetch quest there instead, those could be memorable and likeable) but they made it interesting. I really liked going at my own pace and discovering things. I spent many hours on it and I had fun. I'd say it was a good open world game. They tried new things and managed to make a fun game.

But in no way is it the masterpiece everyone claims, it had glaring flaws that affected every aspect of the gameplay, like the shitty combat, durability system, braindead climbing sections, short and piss easy story dungeons, unreliable horses, the vast emptiness and monotonous shrines. I can't fathom how anyone could claim BOTW as GOTY or even GOAT.

It was a good game. I had fun and I'm glad I bought it. I have zero trouble admitting it's not some revolutionary masterpiece, that would be an insult to many better games with lower budgets by smaller studios. It requires a very specific brand-loyal man-baby mindset to claim BOTW is perfect or GOAT.

It's been a while since I played it but I recall the horses being a little shitty. They didn't steer too well and you had to leave them behind for so many things (combat, environment, puzzles), it was troublesome to catch a new horse and even that would be gone after a while. With the constant horse disappearances and poor whistle response it was easier to just run on foot. And there was way too fucking much running through empty fields, the map could've been 20% smaller

In fact, it worked beyond what would be realistic. Horses could hear you and come from very far away

It's just that climbing a tall place and gliding is just way faster. 2nd time I p,ayed I avoided using the glider and decided to mostly travel by land and it feels like a completely different game

I did register horses, what about it? I wasn't expecting realism and I certainly didn't want it. The thing is, once you climb a tower or a mountain and glide off of it the horse is nowhere to be seen and won't respond to whistle, it would've worked were whistle just a magical horse summon button. Most of the time you're out in the wild far from any stable and seeing to a horse was way too troublesome and binding so I wound up leaving them behind every time

RDR 2 is an absolute masterpiece, but BotW is pretty ok too. Had lots of potential but ended up being average. Maybe the sequel will come close to RDR 2s greatness.

The biggest area in which BotW is superior to RDR2 is in the structure of missions and tasks. RDR2 is linear as fuck and treats you like a baby at every single turn when it comes to story and side missions, there are very few missions where alternate solutions are even possible.
Meanwhile in BotW, almost all bosses, shrines and tasks have different ways you can tackle them, and actually lets the player experiment and learn from the game without any intrusive tutorials or handholding, you have to do it all yourself, like a fucking adult, which is hilarious, the game meant for families (BotW) treats you less like a retarded child than the game meant for adult and scruffy adults (RDR2)
