The top is one moveset with palette swaps the bottom is 1.5 movesets with 4 unique fighter slots because Smash sucks at representing Zelda and Fire Emblem properly.

Marth snd Roy were added in the same game that first showed similar characters with different properties (Mario snd Doc, Fox and Falco etc).

Later Roy was taken out in exchange for Ike who was completely different, but fan demand for him brought him back as DLC for 4.

In Smash 4, Lucina was literally the same as the DQ Heroes, a skin for Marth. But Sakurai notes a lot of characters struggle to play Marth because of his Tipper System, and so decided that Lucina could be a Marth for beginners.

Chrom was added due to sheer fan demand, and in the spirit of keeping it in the family, he is a Roy without the sweet spot on the hilt.
