Well yeah, how much you gain from indulging in the hobbies of the other sex obviously isn't equal, but that just boils down to the basics of attraction between the sexes and what they (generally) seek in their partners.
Men tend to go after more physical elements of the woman (appearance, age, interests, etc.) while women seek traits that make the man a capable provider for her offspring (wealth, physical capability, assertion, etc.) Basically, women have more to gain from pretending to enjoy video games than men have to gain from pretending to enjoy, I dunno, embroidery or some shit. Exploiting men's natural desire to provide by showing traits they enjoy and showing interest in their hobbies is, well, human nature.
