There are a few decent people who do that, but individual video games are much heftier of a time investment, especially to the point where you understand the game enough to review it in-depth. This means both that fewer of these videos will be made (and thus less games covered) based on how long they take to make, and that people are less likely to even want to cover these kinds of games because nobody wants to put 50 hours into a game they think is a 4/10

This leads to an obsession with value, tribalism to justify the games you cannot play for reasons of financial sobriety and too many people thinking more about the games they don't play than those they do.
This is why video game reviews are more like reviews of vacuum cleaners than art like music or films. I don't know the solution for this but I know as long as it is the case that we to such a degree consider the price of games rather than its inherent quality we cannot escape it.

A lot of games should probably get 4/10 and the likes, but due to a culture of checkbox style culture of reviewing, games that "work" on a technical level cannot be scored less than say 6/10. In any field a degree of objectiveness can be achieved. Unless a work is transformative to the genre, objective standards can be used to measure it.
It's just very distracting to the discussion that we start by focusing on the technical aspects. That it works is the bare minimum and you don't see a garbage film get 3/5 because the audio is in sync with the video and it plays uninterrupted from start to finish. Even if we all know that a 7/10 is actually a bad score, it still limits our ability to rightfully shit on bad games, because someone will say "does it not work?" and we will have to concede that we does and unless we waste our time futilely trying to explain why that doesn't really matter that's the end of that. The bad game is then merely not very good and that's really more than most games deserve to go down as.

He mostly does it for fun though so it doesnt bother him. He also said indie devs will send him early copies sometimes but that's it.
