pretty sure i'm a millennial. iphone came out when i was in high school and I remember it was a thing only upper-middle class+ people got. I'd say about 3 years after that though smartphones were a very regular thing.

You're right, was pretty rare for teenagers to have smart phones up until around 2010 or 2011 when they became pretty common for high schoolers but still weren't a fundamental part of life. Now practically every middle schooler(and a lot of elementary schoolers) have them.
The rest of my post is why you are on the border. You were an adolescent during a transitional period. You probably can't relate to Gen Zs at all but still don't quite fit in with millennials.

Not all of em user. I'm 23 and I had a sega genesis and I loved it. Can't count the hours I'd put into that every morning before school. Not to mention I was also old enough to play the mario bros games on NES, pokemon RBY, witness the birth of GBA, etc. Fuckign playing the original GBA in a car sucked because you couldn't see anything unless you were driving past a street light.

I didn't say as a kid, I said as an adolescent. Around 2002, more and more families were buying phones as "emergency" phones for whenever you would go out. By 2003, my senior year of high school, a huge chunk of my graduation class had cell phones because it was a convenient way for parents to keep tabs on their kids.

There isn't really a specific cutoff, if you were born from 94-97 you grew up during a transitional period, later than that and you are definite zoomer though.
