remember when games just used to come out? they just releases and you got it. Now every game has a several month "hype phase" with cinematic trailers, gameplay trailers, convention showcases, merchandising, special events, dev commentaries/panels, launch countdowns, subreddits, livestreams, etc etc. i firmly believe this makes people burnt out on the actual game far quicker since they've been thinking about it for half a year before playing it
