So a JP publisher has spilled the beans exactly how Epic games boosts numbers of sales on their Epic game store, they buy copies of the game themselves through their own store with that fortnite money. Hundreds of thousands of copies in-fact, they guarantee hundreds of thousands of copies will be sold if they move to EGS.
"Now some people have been confused about the reference of the platform holder being guaranteed payment for hundreds of thousands of copies in exchange for exclusivity. What this means is that the platform holder would guarantee that ‘X’ amount of copies would be paid for on behalf of the platform. So even if they don’t move ‘X’ amount of copies organically, they would still be subsidized through the deal to make up the difference."
It isn't but they just have to last long enough to deal some damage against Steam and make people check it out. Fortnite is still the biggest game right now.

>507k satisfactory sales >Suspiciously rounded number close to 500k >They actually sold 7k copies and Epic paid for the rest >When epic said that Metro Exodus sold a lot, EGS were the ones who probably bough 95% of the copies to begin with >And as EGS cut is only 12% instead of 30, they are losing a shitload of money Oh Oh. Thats hilarious. I kinda understand the publishers decision of scamming the shit out of epic and taking their money. Just keep doing it until EGS is bankrupt I think Metro exodus is the only game that probably lost some brand value in the process.

Steam isn't exactly a mom&pop shop though that can get walmart'd that easily.

>they buy copies of the game themselves through their own store with that fortnite money. Isn't this fraud?
The only reason we're still having this conversation today is because they have absurd amounts of Fortnite money to fall back on. If they fail to get a real foothold (as in enough ACTUAL people ACTUALLY buying from them) in the market by the time people start getting fed up with and leaving Fortnite then they're fucked. Unfortunately, that's years off from where we currently are if current trends are anything to go by.
it's a bigger game than the consumer at this point
EGS recycling fortnite money in to their own store for other devs means that the deal isn't just about money
you know what steam can't offer?
the guarantee that your game isn't a flop.

they also give away a free game every 2 weeks, which count as sales.

Not exactly-- they are agreeing to cover the cost of X amount of copies. They are purchasing the keys (and risk of no sale) and reselling the key. Then, when the game exceeds the specified number, the owner begins to see additional sales. It would be fraud if Epic were to be getting money based upon the lie of copies sold, a la investments.
I doubt it works like that. They have no reason to just sit on that many copies.

If they tell the government the truth and pay the due taxes, i think it isnt. Its a private held company.

real talk why the fuck do you all care about this at all like why do you care so deeply about the internal operations of video game companies lmao
Parker Wright
The threads are started by Steamshills who are afraid that games won't go on their bloated store anymore when devs realize that Epic is a safer choice.

>the guarantee that your game isn't a flop You know what this will turn into? People scamming epic to pay for the games they dont expect to sell. Hell, i strongly think deep silver is doing it with Shenmue. It's a a niche title, most of the core audience already owns a key because of the kickstarter, i doubt it would sell much.
So the kicker is that deep silver doesnt care if you pirate it or not, they are too busy scamming epic
Bentley Barnes
>why do you care about video game companies inflating sales of shitty games Yeah why aren't we posting epic wojaks about trannies instead?

1/10 bait you got me to reply

He isn't 100% correct anyways. Yeah, fiscally you may recoup risk by having a set amount of revenue in the bank-- but at what cost? If you alienate your users or you don't actually sell but a tiny fraction of the copies allotted, you haven't done shit but tread water at best.
