I do wonder if facial capture is cheaper than designing an original character face.

Facial animation is ridiculously hard apparently. Vampire the Masquerade was like a decade old game that somehow did it great and all the advancements in tech and AAA games couldn't match it until they said fuck it we'll just facial capture real faces and slap that in there. Which then requires getting actors that can actually act and not just speak into a mic which then leads to a demand for actors. And that's how we got on this path.

You can do a knock off version of it with a smart phone and some simple software, so yea its definitely cheaper than having an artist zbrush up a realistic face.

This, I really ended up enjoying Dex.

Take the recent Mass Effect Andromeda facial animation fiasco as a example of how hard programming in facial animation is.

They let a machine do the majority of facial animations. The Cora sex scene looks great and was actually hand crafted

afaik TW3 did the same, with people touching the animation up at points.

Yeah, cgi cutscenes have always looked better than in game animation.

Really games are playing catch up to what Lord of the Rings started in film with Gollum.
