Did we hit the new battle royale genre?

Valve won

It really speaks loudly about the current state of AAA games, when the biggest trends in the last 10 years are mostly mods.

>make literally the most mindless, RNG-based "strategy" game possible
>instant smash hit
what the fuck is wrong with people

Why take risks when you can just copy someone else?

Because RNG gives bad players the ability to randomly get wins or think they are good. Any strategy based game that tries to make RNG minimal dies off really fast as some people can't win any games

the only good thing to come from valve that wasn't a mod is portal 1 & 2. not a recent phenomenon.
>counter-strike
mod
>dota
mod
>tfc/tf2
mod

they literally can't design shit except for the one stroke of genius that was portal

> he doesn't know portal's mechanics came from a student game and valve hired all the students to make the game.

It takes a single braincell to play. It's going to washed over by the masses. They will play whichever one they see the most for a bit then stop. At most it will be FOTM but only tangentially unlike the global appeal that Battle royals have. The real question is, do you think games like plants vs zombies 2 or Clash of clans still have a recognizable place on the market? Really at most its going to hit big in china probably because they live their lives through their phones.

well shit, valve is just a dumpster fire studio then

literally everything is either half life or warcraft

Portal was originally developed by students, then valve brought them in.

I'm waiting for the day we have a hit genre take off as a mod within a mod, and for 20XX where modding is circular and nobody is sure what the originals are anymore.

Fuck yeah we added Auto Chess to Fallout 76
e3 2020, screencap this

It has just enough RNG that you can reliably get top 3 every game if you know what you're doing and make good decisions. At first it seems like it's all rng, but that's not true at all. It'll be interesting to see what the new games do.
Underlords already has more powerful items, and leagues has the hexagons instead of squares.

I think the league and dota versions will do well because of brand connections. But, I probably wouldn't play one with a bunch of random characters.

dota was a warcraft mod and autochess was a dota 2 mod. So we already have it.

Is auto chess fun?

Yeah. It's more fun if you know the characters, and there's a bit of information you need to know for synergies and when to re-roll. Once you get the basics down, it's not nearly as random.

>wc3 (RTS)
>dota (MOBA)
>autochess (whatever the fuck, board game? strategy?)
(YOU ARE HERE)
>dota tactics (TRPG)
>dotacraft (RTS)

look forward to the cycle completing

perfect blend of skill/knowledge/ and rng to keep things interesting

it's some copy/paste no effort shit that's going to get slapped together 5000 times and retards will print them free money
