>Am I alone? No. Just look at how games evolved since this decade from 2009. mobile gaming markets, more and more games being bought digitally, microtransactions, season passes, broader consumer market. Technology has evolved and video games have been adapted to the new environment.
William Scott
Nope. I remember when games were a full experience instead of a UI to serve up microtransactions. Sure, they'd sometimes be buggy pieces of shit but at least we didn't have to wait years for a GOTY edition to get the complete game.
James Ross
I think you're a fool and have no idea how to find niche material.
John Campbell
this is a deliberate assault by women who were so furious that men didnt 100% divert all attention to them after high school. prove me wrong
Jayden James
remember when whole, new games were only $30? good times.
Ryan Phillips
The year you are looking for is 2007. Countless anons have realized 2006/2007 is where it all went wrong and they've all given reasons as to why everything changed so suddenly but I feel like pic related is closer than most to the answer.
No. When I was young games were like 70+ dollars in 90s money which is roughly 10000 now.
Julian Smith
oh well fuck off then you underage boomer
Jack Kelly
I'm 30. Games were expensive as fuck in the 90s.
Leo Gray
>tfw $60 in 1999 means the same to you as $60 in 2019 I don't know if it's because I'm a tradefag and our income just hasn't gone up or if it's because my state has one of the shittiest economies in the US but my buying power hasn't changed at all. Prices keep going up and everyone says it's because money means less now than it did back then but I don't feel it at all.
I still remember back then that the whole reason why I completely preferred Japanese-developed games is exactly because they weren't buggy pieces of shit. It's still generally true today except for a few weirdo cases like that Disgaea installment that would brick your console.
Michael Johnson
that's a you problem maybe look into other forms of hobbies if you can't find a game to enjoy
>like that Disgaea installment that would brick your console. And those were bugs introduced by baka gaijins on the localization process.
Brayden Sanchez
it's been prevalent in all forms of media for a while. Disney bought marvel and decided to rewrite history; everyone ate it up because they couldnt get anything else shit like CalArts decided to tell everyone what is acceptable animation, gamergate tried to vilify all of its members as sexist, star wars got turned into a fem shit fest, CoD got turned into Blacked Ops, battlefield got fem raped, Devil May Cry went emo and made a scene kid Dante, anything popular you can think of got infected and pozzed and now anything that tried to stay sane is under the control of these pro gay black tranny Nazis of "free speech" All this shit added up is enough to make someone seem like a conspiracy theorist nutter but its all happening right in front of our faces and because half of us(including every parent possible) are just fine with being fucked over, no one gets any justice. fighting it would only get you in trouble what kind of a fucking world is this? its enough to create NEETs who completely abstain from the fantasy realm that is current reality
oh ok plus another thing is that the Japanese generally work really fast fixing any post-release bugs
Jacob Mitchell
I feel the exact opposite actually. I feel that with the way current trends are going that games have actually regressed and while I've grown, they have become easier, less engaging, and creatively bankrupt. The overwhelming vast majority of games out of E3 were sequels or rehashes. I'm an oldfag and I grew up as the videogame industry was created. It used to be about fun and enjoyment. Now it's about narratives and control. So it's not that video games have passed me by. It's that they've managed to fall to the wayside because of shitty people making shitty games.
Henry Anderson
how come none of the guys who actually grew up and enjoyed video games were encouraged to go into the field? why was video gaming as a whole treated as a noncompete before the recent decade?
just like back in the day, you have to look for the really good games and hidden gems
Carter Reed
For my part, I think a big part of the problem is the need to "appeal to the community" over and against artistic integrity. Time and time again you see devs make a game, say it's gonna be amazing, everyone gets hyped for it, and then it flops. and then in the post mortem the dev says "well I wanted to do A, B, and C but the higher ups said fans demand X, Y, Z instead," making the game 1) soulless and 2) not what it was meant to be. film has this problem too but it's more forgivable, a two minute scene or character arc is a lot less noticeable than multi-hour games where whole mechanics and interactions are messed up
basically, the problem is that "the community feedback" =/= playerbase, and as long as the trend of devs bowing to marketing/PR charts stands, games are just gonna be what retards on ribbit and community pages scream loudest for
A lot of them did. Most of them were computer science majors that worked on games for fun at universities and turned it into a business because it turns out a lot of people liked their games. But most of them are no longer creating games.
Lucas Jones
They have passed you by. Most games (80%) are designed for children and teens to play them, just like you played them when you were a kid. That's how it is, and that's how companies, especially console developers, make money.
It is a GOOD thing that these games are passing you by. That means you're growing up. You're learning not to eat shit.
I think you and OP feel the same way but just articulate it differently. 2007 is the year everyone quotes but it's for good reason, there's a laundry list of huge, great titles starting that year. the problem is every year since, it's all been those same games with different coats of paint
I couldn't give less of a shit about the new xbox or development in graphics quality or whatever if it's all still the same shit from over a decade ago, there's so many possible fresh stories and mechanics to approach games with and yet we still just have the EXACT same stuff
Christopher Cook
Watch Hypernormalization if you're interested in this sort of stuff. It does exaggerate some bits but it's a great documentary if you want to have even a bit of a clue as to how the fuck the world got this insane.
Video games were once a hobby, not such a big business. They were like TV series, you enjoyed them but you didn't talk about them too much, they were other important things. perhaps on the one hand it is good that the company has relaxed and that now the most popular topics of discussion also include video games, comics, TV series
but for the capitalist system it is just one more tool to take your money, so there will be more and more video games, whose quality will inevitably be lower than in the past, and will be as mild and generic as possible because they will have to: A) attract the largest number of users without B) offend anyone
Thomas Gomez
thanks breh, i"ll check that out later
Nolan Harris
you cant please all of the people all of the time, but that sure doesnt stop them from pissing off every demographic they use and throw in the trash like EA
Luke Turner
You're not alone. A lot of sensible replies in this thread.
