Was too lazy to ever learn the junction system and the GFs were OP, the game even encourages you to use them and it's even a part of the storyline that overusing it was affecting you. I literally did nothing but use GFs the ENTIRE game, not an exaggeration, because I didn't learn the junction system any other attack did no damage. I made it all the way to the last boss fight without issue but the final fight was impossible to beat.

It feels like that was the original intent and changed somewhere in development and they don't want to re-go back on it, which is rather sad. It made FF8 so much better in my opinion, still my fav FF despite its problems, but it's definitely a blow.

If I remember correctly, it was partly because of random party member switching and needing to have all of them be competent, I think there were 3 phases but I didn't have a chance by the second one.

I actually did set out to learn the system and set out to start drawing the hell out of strong magic but it would have taken too long and I gave up after a while.

I just replayed it last year. Not gonna be in the mood to replay it again yet. And something about the models, at least Squall's (barely seen the others) bugs me. Not sure if it's because I'm too used to the old models or what.

Yeah, the worst part is it picks who you fight with at random and anyone KO'd is just sent to the Shadow Realm so you either start off with a great team but accidentally lose a strong member and get fucked or get 3 shitters and can't do anything for a while. FF8's final boss is a huge jump in difficulty compared to the rest of the game.

I'm unironically more excited for it than the FF7 remake. It's been 10+ years since I last played it.

Maybe its because I'd been playing with an HD texture pack on PC the last time I played and it looked more or less the same as the remaster, at a glance. I don't know why at least half of the reveal trailer they showed was just the CG cutscenes from the game that didn't even look remastered either.

Yeah, they are probably (most likely) just reusing assets from that game anyway.

It's a game of very high peaks and very low troughs. Stuff like the Shuma Village and the weirdness at the end of the game where you can go through a door onto a barren world map will keep me from playing.

I also never beat Adel without Self-Destruct and never beat Seifer 3 without Gilgamesh.

I remember when fans wanted a VII remake since the ps2 came out, and all people wanted was a graphical upgrade. At this point, I'm satisfied with the full-blown remake. We have the original, and good enough mods to give us that good graphical upgrade + more.

It's an unhealthy crush that happens to work out in the end. Rinoa is bad at relationships, it's part of her character. They go out of their way to juxtapose it with a more traditional, healthy love story in Laguna and Julia.

Now, on the other hand the game has probably the best implementation of an ATB system, one of the most interesting overworlds in a JRPG, a perfect blend of mystical and futuristic settings, systems like Junction and Refine that deeply reward understanding the game and replaying it later, an amazing soundtrack, a unique summon system in GFs, etc etc.

The game has problems but they're far outweighed by its strengths in my opinion.

You finish the fight like a normal boss battle and keep Odin for the rest of the game. Generally, it's how I prefer to play because I don't like Gilgamesh showing up during boss fights and Odin just looks cooler, even though Gilgamesh is one of my favorite FF characters overall.

I would have been more excited for the announcement of a remake, even if they had barely even started work on it.

They'll obviously cut corners to finish it all in a decade. Don't expect world map traveling or all events from the original told in the same manner, some stuff like Midgar gets more resources to be worked with since it's important, but everything else in between key events after that? chop chop.

What they have so far though is taking what exists in the original and making it denser and more personal. Characters have more interactions, events play out in a more involved way, etc. Like that user said, it's the opposite of diluted. It's dense in a way that will likely please fans but also make the entire story take ages to finish.

Ultimecia is a nothing villain with no real backstory that makes any sense in any context, let alone the entirety of the ending with Squall and Rinoa. It makes Rinoa a nothing character as well other than "She's the White to Ultimecia's Black."

It goes from being a generic story with no real writing towards the end to actually having some semblance of reasoning to the villain's motivations beyond "I don't want to lose." and giving more backbone to Rinoa's feelings for Squall over time and Squall's general character as well.

The theory makes more sense than half the theories within the FF series barring the obvious connections between certain games such as FF3/8, 10/7, etc.
It's an ok/decent game, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too much for it. If you can find it cheap it's worth a play at least.

Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were funny. In retrospective the overall movies aren't anything to write home about but they have their moments. Big Daddy is a legitimate good movie. Haven't seen any of them in years though. And I don't see how you can dislike Sandler's early stuff but like Farley's. They weren't too far off from each other.

I feel they at least played with the idea and it was honestly changed at some point. Even in Dissidia they played with the idea to some extent with their weapons between Rinoa and Ultimecia.
No problem, and yeah it sadly is just a theory. I personally love it as it gives more driving force to the story and the character motivations, and it's a real shame that they openly denied it. Ultimecia is a joke boss, it doesn't matter if you lose a party member you didn't use, since they get replaced by the good ones after they die. It's also basically impossible to die to her if you junction anything to your stats. You can also easily outheal her even if you have nothing junctioned and constantly revive your team before they get removed from the fight.

And the best part? SHE'S THE ONLY ENCOUNTER IN THE GAME THAT DOESN'T SCALE. If you're lvl 100, she is still lvl 60, no matter what.

Yeah, it's best to stay around Lv. 15, draw as much as you can before Ifrit at Balamb and the overworld, and do Triple Triad as much for the weapons.
Both of them have level scaling, Ultimecia in her last form does not, and I agree, knowing the system makes all her forms a cake-walk, but a lot of people don't really understand the system, and it's honestly kind of a mess at times in terms of explanation with junction and drawing and just general things. It's my favorite FF but a lot could have been improved in terms of it, I will say I do like FFXV's draw system with its magic quite a bit better.

I still remember my first time playing the game, and oh boy was that a mess because I didn't full understand the systems back when I was like 10-12.

I always hated how Seifer basically got off scott free and just ended up fishing and having fun at the end.

I always thought the game was dogshit with the only mainline game that's worse is 2.

I think a lot of it is that story elements were changed mid-way through. Despite their denial of R=U, it's pretty evident at some point that was the original plan and it was changed, along with a lot of stuff, particularly Irvine and Siefer's roles. Laguna seems to be the only thing that wasn't particularly changed, and it readily shows.

It's a great game though, you should give it another chance honestly, just as I should give 9 another chance, as it's my personal most hated along.

Oh I know, but I'm talking way back during actual development, I feel they toyed with the idea, and just left some hints of it in the game, and just forgot about it and settled on that it wasn't the case. Kitase honestly should role with that idea, I find it silly he prefers the Squall is dead theory to that honestly, but it's their game, not mine, I still love it all the same. But FF8 seems like it definitely had different directions and thoughts at time during development and it was thrown together, but I suppose we'll never truly know since all the old source code, art, etc. has been lost to time.

When it does inevitably get remade in 2060 with 8 Episodes, I guess we'll see if they can fix the last disc and Ultimecia as a villain and Squall/Rinoa's relationship.

It's a remaster, not a remake. Rinoa is still in the game. It'll still fall apart at the same point. It's still a Final Fantasy game.

The original theory is that Ultimecia is from an alternate timeline rather than the base timeline we know and this is her attempt at rewriting it.

We'll start with the basics. Sorceresses in FF8 are prone to becoming evil and mad with time, as is the case with it's general lore, and we know Rinoa ultimately becomes one thanks to Edea/Adel.

You have the fact that Ultimecia's entire gimmick is that she is a Griever, her GF even barring the name, just how Squall has a ring that says Griever on it, which is the default name. The only person to give that ring to Squall is Rinoa, even in the title screen this is evident. In FF7 it was the Buster Sword to show the significance of it due to Zack/Cloud, in FF8, it's the Griever Ring with the Sorceress Glow, both of which Ultimecia and Rinoa are connected to. You also have the fact that Adel was frozen when Rinoa gained her powers, which means there is an issue with a time loop in her gaining said powers, which only Ultimecia is capable of at that point. Hell the entire ending as Rinoa/Ultimecia juxtaposed as Squall goes through the time loop, and the entire imagery of the Fallen Angel, Rinoa's White Angel Wings, and Ultimecia's Black.

That's just a snippet of it. The only real things that destroy the argument other than Kitase's comments are the fact that way back when in the Ultimani written by DigiCube, Square apparently had said that it wasn't possible because Ultimecia's only goal was to "Not Die".
and that they can't live forever (despite Ultimecia clearly having been alive for hundreds of years). It's clear they had some connection in some degree and Ultimecia is never properly explored, explained, or anything, this is on top of GFs (barring Irvine) erasing memories and her usage of Griever, on top of her time-looping abilities, and her destiny being involved with SeeD and them needing knights to keep them in check, which goes in tandem with the Squal is dead theory in actuality.

It is, I won't deny that, but symbolism also has general reasoning behind it. And I remember, it's his manifestation of the ring that she summons through the time compression, a psychological loop if you will. It's still at least personally odd that there is so much symbolism between the three with there being absolutely no real connection between any of them other than Squall defeats Ultimecia and Ultimecia doesn't want to die by Squall/SeeD. Especially for a series like FF that is all about the connections of its characters and villains. A lot of it circumstantial and taking what we know of the story and trying to have it make more sense, won't deny any of that. I just think it makes sense that at some point they potentially thought of the idea themselves and ultimately just dropped it entirely.

Perhaps I'm wrong and they never intended it in the first place, maybe they did and dropped it, at the end of the day it doesn't matter, they don't want to go that route, which personally, and again personally, I think is a rather poor decision unless they can fix a lot of the stuff that makes little sense in FF8 or is just very poorly done and explained.

...I did this every single run. I only needed to kill one. After that, all the next would fall in no time. And with these guys no problem anymore, the game was not about the FUCKING battle length anymore. I enjoyed it far more.

The Galbadian soldiers used a much smaller full sword (the smallest gunblades).
Seifer used a far larger one, but trained with the style he saw in his favorite movie as a kid about a knight with a gunblade fighting a dragon on a cliffside.
Squall had a greatsword gunblade, and it's a brute. Not clenching the trigger would seem p dang clunky, especially when you wanted to.

I liked Rinoa and never really thought she was boring or average looking, but that's just me. But Rinoa and Squall's love story is not much of one and its one of the bigger complaints on the game, Japanese people are generally bad at writing love stories. Even Tidus and Yuna falls flat at times.

I always forget about the Chocobo sidequest in VIII because of how bad it is compared to VII and IX.

I always assumed the blade had a barrel and he is firing a slug when he slashes. And the whole difficult part was being able to line the the shot up right when you slashed.

even if its well received I doubt they'll put the manpower on developing it until FF7 is done, and even then it'll probably be a good 4-5 years after they start before we see anything

15 I can agree with, but even 13 is better than 8. Though 90% of my problem with 8 is the horrible magic system.

They might do that, I believe it's technically possible for him to do so within KH and Dissidia to hurt himself due to his gunblade attacks, it's just very minimally.

15 literally has the draw system but fixed with the Ice/Fire/Thunder geodes near camps. I enjoyed both 13 and 15 personally, but they suffer from personal flaws, as does 7, 9, 10, 12, etc. 8 has problems but it's a well put together game once you get into it properly. It's certainly not the worst FF or even one of the worst in reality.

MY first FF and I still have the physical edition given to me by the cool uncle. Haven't played the pc version so this is pretty exciting.

You can use them for actual magic which is pretty broken actually. I mean I enjoyed it like I do 8 and 13 (especially Gran Pulse), but I get why people don't like any of them, like I do the other FF games.

8 definitely was never the most hated though. It just got the brunt because it wasn't 7/10, so 8/9 fans argued between who was worse. Then 6 entered the fray as people finally played it with Kefka and so on.

"actual magic" my ass. They are glorified grenades that have friendly fire. Only used the, when imperials would drop on me and bunch up.

I never had that problem unless I gave Ignis or Prompto magic, to which they just ass blasted everything around them. I generally always used it only when I needed it and it was timed well, which never got the party hurt, outside of just sometimes a very unlucky time or two, such as Aranea popping in right as I would do so.

Either way, to each their own, it's what opinions are for, everyone has one, they either suck or they don't. This has been the comfiest FF thread we've had in days, and thank God for it.

He was right about everything.

You should avoid Spoony's vids, those are notoriously one of the worst set of opinions on the game by far and were often made fun of or parodied by people who had never touched the game.

Give it a try, you may agree with him, you may not. I find most generally don't, at least not entirely that is.
