With Luminary/Hero representing the Enix part of the RPG boom, and Banjo Kazooie representing the N64 era, I think we have to focus on what other big characters have changed in a way the path of videogames, because while there's a lot of characters that have a chance, there's only few select series that actually revolutionized videogames.

Devil May Cry for the Hack n Slash genre
Fortnite for the Battle Royale genre
among other few series that have a legit chance.

MS also have designs for a grander Xcloud surface amongst multiple platforms, and gestures like BK being in Smash are the first corrupting tendrils of that.

Halo's never been on anything related to Nintendo, except the failed DS game that fell to pieces in the wake of developer relations failing around the Goldeneye remake time.

The Western character will probably be Doomguy or Dovahkiin since Bethesda is one of the Western studios that Nintendo have a strong relationship these days. Other contenders could be Ezio Auditore, Crash Bandicoot, or Geralt of Rivia, but none of those have the same sort of widespread appeal as the first two.

I actually disagree. I feel like at least in the West, DQ has practically zero secondaries, tertiaries etc, so the only ones who were really excited were those who played it. Touhou has so many fans that haven't even played the games it's nuts, all it takes is a little IOSYS or cute art or OSTs and boom, you've got someone ready to lose their mind over Reimu like myself.
