Genuine question, wtf am i meant to be doing in this game. I don't get it. No I'm not a zoomer but i've never actually seriously played through a sonic game before.
am I trying to go as fast as possible through the level ? or get as many coins as possible by the end of a level ? I don't fucking get it

It depends on how you want to play. One way to play is going through and finding the big rings in the level that take you to bonus stages, then completing the bonus stages to get the seven chaos emeralds, then completing the game. Another way is trying to beat each level as fast as possible either in time trial mode, or in the straight game. Sometimes this also means playing different characters, or challenging yourself to play as a certain one. It's up to you and what you find fun.

You're supposed to run to the end of the level and beat the boss and get yourself some chaos emeralds. When you're done the main game and Encore mode you can go to the time attack mode and see how fast you can beat levels which is what most people do when finishing Sonic games.

they matter to keep you alive, your ring bonus score at the end of the zone, whether you can turn super sonic etc. you're a gamer. play the game and figure it out holy shit. do you need a tutorial or walkthrough for you to figure out how to play every video game?
Well if you have at least 20 rings when you run past a checkpoint you can go through a bonus stage and if you complete the bonus stage after a certain amount of times you'll unlock extra stuff. Every time you get 100 rings you get a life and if you have all of the chaos emeralds and get yourself 50 rings something special will happen. Rings are also your life source so its good to hold onto them.

Get to the end and also find the fuckhuge rings that lead to the chaos emerald bonus stages while you're at it, that's literally all that's important. Everything else is a means to an end.
Also if you have enough rings each checkpoint lets you enter a different type of bonus, but that's just for unlocking stuff in the extras menu.
