Windows 7 received some DirectX 12 support months ago, but that doesn't matter because only like two or three games even use it because it's terrible. Every still uses DirectX 11 because it's far easier to work with. Windows 7 is still the better choice for gaming, especially if you intend to play any older games.

I feel like my family's first computer had a thing on the desk that the monitor sat on top of that was the power supply. It had orange/red lighted switches on it and you had to power it on to power on the monitor but it wasn't the tower itself. I was young and it was a Compaq that ran Windows 95, but that's really all I remember about it. I didn't git gud until the Gateway Pentium 3 with Windows 98 and 64 megs of RAM on which I played Half Life a couple years late and BASED RED ALERT 2.

I think some things work better under Linux, like some emulators I looked at recently - Cemu (Wii U) and Yuzu (Switch). I'm pretty sure that's what I remember seeing in a video. You can always dual boot with Windows. Personally I have a MacBook Pro and I dual boot macOS and Windows. My machine ain't powerful enough for Cemu or Yuzu. And I can do *NIX stuff in macOS.

That's really not an argument. I have Linux installed on my old MacBook but I really don't have a huge amount of use for it so my new one doesn't have it (I can do *NIX stuff with macOS).

If I had a Windows machine I probably would dual boot with Linux just to fuck around with *NIX stuff, or for web development. That's great, but i'm speaking from personal experience. I won't ever touch Windows 10 again, and that's without getting into how shit it's compatibility is with 90% of the programs I use for work.

I am never going to "upgrade" to Windows 10 no matter what they do. I don't care if they completely cut off support for 7. I don't care if I get a fatal virus because of no security updates. I will just wipe everything clean and reinstall because I have everything important backed up. It dowsn't matter if they try to make new hardware incompatible with anything but Windows 10. People already have made workarounds for their tricks.

If new games stop working on Windows 7 and there is no way to force them to then I will just stop playing games on PC. I am not going to install an operating system that allows H1B curryniggers to run experiments on my computer and push out unfinished updates (which I am forced to install immediately) that could brick my PC at any moment.

Unfortunately, a lot of driver support for 7 has already died off. I bought a new mobo and couldn't install 7 because the native USB driver support in 7 was no longer compatible with 3.0. There were a couple of workarounds but I couldn't be bothered.

Basically 10 is a botnet out to take every bit of saleable information from you, but Microsoft is going to force you to install it sooner or later. Unless you're willing to work to make every game function in Linux. Might as well go in knowing what you're in for.

I still can't play most of my games on Linux. TF2, despite it apparently having good Linux supports, has a massive performance decrease; Fallout 4 (with mods) doesn't even start, Minecraft runs worse. Trust me, I'd love to switch, but at the same time, I'd like to have the best possible performance; moreover, the downsides of Windows (bloat, etc.) are easily avoidable (at least on Windows 7).

thing is, you'd have to completely deactivate updates,- which, on Windows 10, is quite hard-, in order to properly "mod" Windows 10. For example, custom themes are incredibly difficult to install on Windows 10, and everytime it had an update, it'd just revert to it's old design and so on. I've had W10 on dual boot for quite awhile now and only used it for a few MS Store games but I've been starting to use it regularly recently. Overall it just feels faster to navigate and I've had no real issues of any kind so far. The forced nature of updates is kind of annoying but I just haven't bothered to dig around to turn that off and I check for them regularly anyway so haven't been interrupted while actually doing anything.

W7 driver support is going to start going away in the next few years so it was only a matter of time before I need to switch, Intel and AMD both officially dropped support for pre W10 my 6700k is the last gen of intel with official W7 support. I predict Steam to support it for at least the next 5 years at a minimum though. Still going to keep my W7 install around though because I've seen some older games just outright not working on W10 or being a finnicky bastard to get running.

I like the look and cohesiveness of Windows 7 better but I feel more productive on Windows 10. The built-in social crap in the lower right is a godsend, as is the search function in the taskbar. It's like a plebby little command prompt. But 10 has weird things like legacy programs built-in that don't show themselves in the start menu and inconsistent designs for right-click menus. I just right clicked this webpage, my desktop, and my start menu and got a different design each time.

That said, I haven't had issues playing video games.

This. W10's compatibility with older games is absolute garbage. Even more recent late 2000s games like Shadow of Chernobyl have many issues, almost none of which appear all at once, meaning you'd better be ready to troubleshoot for a week before enjoying the game.

Arch's wiki is helpful regardless of what distro you use

You start by trying it out in a virtualbox if only to see which distro comes with defaults you like most.
Once you think you're ready, consider dual booting rather than just purging windows entirely.
Download rufus and use it to make a bootable usb with linux.
Then go to windows partition manager, right click -> shrink volume to make some space for linux.
During installation some distros like ubuntu will show you a handy "install next to windows" option, but you can always read up on manual partitioning.
Linux uses ext4 instead of ntfs on its partitions, which means that space will be inaccessible to windows. But linux deals with ntfs just fine.

Windows 10 is better. Windows 7 only lets you use up to 4gb of VRAM in games.

You can already do it for free, you would need to activate a license later though.

Step 1. You need a windows 7 64-bit ISO and an activator (would highly recommend Windows 7 Loader 1.6.9 by Daz works flawlessly) .

2. You need to burn it to a DVD or do a mountable USB (there are guides on the net on how to do those).
3. Change boot in the BIOS (press f2) so that it boots the USB or DVD.
4. When the install is done, activate the Windows loader. Just do the default. Restart.
