The weaker ones die when they lack a suitable vessel for their soul, requiring semi-fresh corpses to inhabit as per the summoner quest, but the big daddy ascians only seem to go away by being absorbed by a primal or lifestream or scattered to the four winds by hitting their soul with a massive aetherial blast.

Read your fucking tooltips. Damage over time effects "tick" every 3 seconds so the total damage of a DoT is the initial damage + the DoT damage*(duration/3). Ideally you want to refresh your DoTs right before they fall off because of the way they work, when there's less than 3 seconds left on the timer. DoTs and attacks "snapshot" your buffs and enemy debuffs when used so if you use an attack when you have 0.01s left on a damage buff the attack wil get buffed by it even if the animation comes out after the buff wears off and if you use a DoT effect under a damage buff then the entire duration of the DoT is buffed, not just the ticks during the buff timer.
You should try to complete most of the quests that have a blue quest icon with a + on it, because those quests unlock new content. The exception is the "so you want to be a " quests which just unlock new classes so you can safely ignore them.
That's all you really need to know that the game doesn't teach you.

-non-combat classes are actually both useful and fun to use in xiv

-Ul'dah is what most people would consider the "canon" starting zone storywise (thaumaturge, paladin and monk classes start there)

basic things you might not know:
-classes and jobs are the same thing. Classes are just the names of the jobs pre lv30. For example Lancer class turns into the Dragoon job after doing it's lv30 quest.
-after lv10 you can do the quest for any classes and switch into those classes anytime you want with equipping their class weapon. All classes level separately
