8 is pretty good if you have a 3ds just grab a copy, 7 is also on the 3ds but it's stupidly long.

Pick Eleven if you don’t mind starting a 200 hour RPG (and for gods sake play on hard mode if you don’t want to breeze through it).
Pick Five if you want a 30 hour taster with relatively simple mechanics and a great plot.
Start with 3, 4, 8, or 11.
8 or 11 are the better options if you are someone who isn't into old RPGs.
The best game varies depending on who you ask, but regardless, 1 and 2 are the worst, so do not play them first.

This is outdated, but still relevant. For 3, the GBC version has more content, but the SNES version looks and sounds better. Your choice there. I personally go for the GBC version.

My favorite is IV. It had a nice story and characters. Best villain too, Psaro in my opinion is one of the best written villains in the franchise.

user 11 is not that long. I'll admit I'm a series vet, but 11 only took me about 100 hours to beat and that was with doing almost every sidequest and mindlessly grinding to an average level of 95 in my party near the very very end of the game since the game made it very easy to do so.
I have had DQVII for so long, inside my 3ds in a drawer. I need to get back to that game someday.
Ah I mean that it took me 100 hours to beat including post game. Main game took me about 70 hours.

VIII was the starting point for most westerners and remains a good entry to the series. Some people prefer the 3DS version but the PS2 version is the way to go in my book.
V has the best story. DS and PS2 versions are both viable.
IV has the chapter gimmick which focuses on different characters, and has a good mid-battle party switching mechanic a la FFX. Phone version is actually best since party chat was added back in, but DS is fine as well.
III introduced the class system and has good exploration. GBC has some more content but SNES has better graphics.

I'd recommend GBC of I & II, GBC of III, DS of IV, V, VI, VII for 3DS, VIII for PS2, and IX, then XI.
I’ve played a couple games and I got like 90% of the way on normal mode in 100ish hours, restarted on hard and it took me 200 to finish the game.

Yeah I know I have some hot takes on the main series since 8 is that high and 9 is in S tier, but that's how I feel. Honestly 9 is still my overall favorite DQ, and I played all but like 4 hours of it alone. I have 250+ hours total in it last I checked. Probably more since this is spread across multiple saves.

DQM Joker 1 was the first (and only) DQ game I played.
I was super hyped at first, it was charming and all, but then it became super grindy and repetitive and I dropped it.
Should I go back to it?

DQMJ3 is incredibly good and people only don't talk about it because it never got an english release. The translated crack is easy enough to find though.
I also found Joker a bit grindy, which is why Joker 2 and 3 are above it. Joker 2 was damn near perfect last I played it. I'm not a huge fan of the monster catching sub genre, but I loved it. I say skip it and got to Joker 2. If you have a hacked 3DS or a decent PC, then play/emulate Joker 3. That is also really good. Better mechanically that Joker 2 imo.
It is grindy, but they kept improving it in the sequels.

Number fucking 1. It's short, inoffensive, simple and you can play it on your phone. I'd tell you to skip it, but playing it is a requirement to understand the main twist of DQ3.
DQ2 can be skipped somewhat safely, it does introduce a lot of mechanics and setpieces that would become mainstays in DQ games, but it doesn't realise those things particularly well. The game feels a bit bloated, like they ran out of content halfway through development and still wanted to make the game longer. Also it requires some hard fucking grinding closer to the end. It's also relatively disconnected from the plot of the Erdrick trilogy, being the latest in the timeline. So just skip it unless you're looking for a history lesson rather than a fun vidya experience.
DQ3 is a shining jewel and a massive leap forward for the series, PLAY IT.
There's only one problem with it - the version choice. The choice is between the mobile version and the fan-translated SNES remake (because the remake was never officially released in the west). Mobile version features a good localisation (arguably), an option of auto-combat and it highlights items hidden in the cities and dungeons with little sparkles. The remake has animated monster sprites, a somewhat fun boardgame style minigame, you HAVE to class switch into a thief at some point just to learn a spell that helps you find aforementioned hidden items, and the fan translation is janky as fuck, a fact that will probably impact you if you're trying to beat the game without walkthroughs.
It's a shame that we don't have the "definitive" version of the best DQ out there, but that's how it is, make your choice. Or just play both versions, I did that.
After 3 just play them all in order, they're all great to good, with part 6 being the lowest point of the series past part 2 (still decent, but you'll learn to fucking hate the game if you try to get deep into the modified class switching system).

Read the rank they are in. Those were only released in Japan and have no fan translation.
They don't have translations.
Also if you're gonna play the DQMJ3 translation watch out for a chest reasonably early on that crashes the game.
