If you ever want to know how companies can get away with fucking their customers dry, look no further then the Western DQ fanbase.
It blows my mind that such people exist. I'd called them sycophants, but that would imply they're gaining anything.
What happened exactly?
Dragon Quest VIII (8) is probably the easiest to jump into 'gameplay wise'.
It has a much more modern feel then the entries which came before.
It's on Ps2 but the 3DS Remake is also great and has some quality of life changes and upgrades - such as enemies on map instead of random encounters.
-
Personally the story and characters of VIII wasn't my favorite, but that could be different for you.
Dragon Quest XI (11) is also a a great starter, being the most recent and polished.
If your only gonna play one game because you wanna see what it's all about - I'd say play XI and then if you like it go back to the previous entries.
Unironically 7 and only play 1 chapter a week on sunday morning so it feels like sunday morning cartoons.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
4 is when the fun starts. 1-3 are autism simulators
honestly just play 11 not worth going back
6
you start with the worst one.
no idea. there's nothing wrong with the "western" DW/DQ series. that guy sounds like a contrarian shitposter.
>start with the one that's the most polished gameplay-wise and then move backwards
Idk, I did that with Persona 5 and it made 3 really difficult to get into
SQ released DQ11 for PS4 in Japan, then released it with additional features for both the PS4 and PC in the West without bothering to try and rectify the situation in Japan. Now they're releasing a version of DQ11 for the Switch that makes the previous differences look like nothing.
As far as I've seen there is little outrage and the majority in the West are basically bending over and accepting the situation because it either doesn't effect them or they're willing to double dip.
DQ 11 was my first DQ game and it's also heralded as the best. I can confirm that it is indeed a good game. I don't like JRPG's but I liked this one.
>Light
>Gohan
>Trunks
>Sinbad
>playing Dragon Warrior 7 on the PS1 over summer break
>get to that village under attack by vines or something
>kill the worm they think is the culprit because not paying much attention to story
>everyone is depressed
>town is destroyed in future
>don't even realize this isn't how it's supposed to be
>find out 20 more hours into the game while looking up something unrelated online
>restart entire fucking game from scratch because I can't bear the guilt
I never implied there was anything wrong with the Western versions of the DQ games, though now that you mention if there are repeated instances of them being short changed in comparison to the Japanese versions.
I was and am still calling out those in the Western fanbase who try and defend SQ's actions. If DQ wasn't so low on the totem pole in the West you'd probably be seeing this shit all over Yea Forums just like the uproar over Tifa's breasts.
wait there are multiple sollutions to situations?
3, 4, 5, 8, and 11 are all great starting points. This pic is outdated, but it's still relevant.
but only autistic zoomers are actually screeching about tifa's breasts or her "censored" legs. her tits are the same size as they were in the original.
It's kinda crazy how high quality DQ XI is. Everything just screams triple A Jrpg. Makes all the other games in this space just look very lazy and dispassionate comparatively.
I started at 8
It really depends if you like NES-era JRPGs with 0 QOL features, if you do, then English patches for the first 3 DQ games exist.
If you don't like very old JRPGs, then I'd say start with the games on the DS, they're pretty good. DQ9 is also in there which makes you skip DQ7 and DQ8 but it's not a big deal since DQ9 is a bit different than the usual DQ games by allowing you to make characters yourself. It's the least popular game in the franchise, but it's still good gameplay-wise.
Then play DQ7 on the 3DS and DQ8 either on PS2 or 3DS, 3DS has more content and allows you to marry best babe in the end.
Then finally, play DQ11. With the obviously much better version with QOL enhancements coming out for the Switch, I'd say wait until that version releases. SE will not give the PC and PS4 versions the Special Edition treatment.
In my opinion DQ5, 7, 8 and 11 are the best in the series and if you just play those, you're not missing out on much.
Doesn't matter who it is that gives a shit about Tifa's breasts or the breasts themselves in the first place. My point is that if DQ was bigger in the West you'd be seeing threads about what SQ did instead of just Smash shit.
i doubt it. people barely made a stink about Bravely Default censorship and DQ is definitely bigger than that.
V is considered to be the best.
DQ games are really grindy, though. The plot is really classic.
I'm not talking about censorship, I'm talking about SQ pulling scummy shit like it's still 1999 and the only way to update a game is a rerelease or expansion pack.
V is the best one of all series. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that one but actually it's not too lengthy and it's fairly easy, so maybe you would want that.
IX is too gameplay focused, but it's pretty simplistic as well and hard to fuck up with it.
VIII is the one many people recommend as a first, but it's actually a little bit more of a difficult game. Also slower paced.
Leave VII for later, but consider that it -is- worth playing. It's the longest DQ game to date, it can take you easily over 100 hours to complete without even fiddling with any extra content.
III is surprisingly fun as fuck.
IMO start with IX, III or V. Your choice. If you only want to play one Dragon Quest and leave it there, V it is.
The great thing about Dragon Quest is that they all essentially play the exact same. Just a different story to enjoy. All of the ones one 3ds are fantastic but just like user said, 11 is probably the easiest to dip your toe in
The definitive version of 3 is the GBC release.
Elaborate. How could lower res and less color be better?
What happen to Dragon Quest 10?
MMO exclusive to Japan. Nuff said.
Three words:
M
M
O
weird look for trunks and draven, who the fuck are the other niggers?
>it made 3 really difficult to get into
I know a lot of people that say stuff like this and I understand why but I have never felt like a sudden loss of QoL has affected me significantly.
I guess I have just gotten good at forcing myself to view games in the context of their era rather than in a modern sense
>muh graphics
it has extra content, that's it. and not to mention that the sprites and animation for DQ3 on GBC still look fucking gorgeous, especially for a GBC game.
Ok, thanks. I do love that smoooooth GBC animation
why reply if you haven't actually seen the game?
Awwww, did Daddy hurt you?
Because he answered my question.
I've seen smooth GBC games in the past (like SF Alpha one) so I can extrapolate that, and really "more content" was all I needed to know.
So wait, how is it the western fan's problem that the Japs didn't get the extra shit? Moreover, how does that mean that the western fans are getting milked dry?
V is my favourite so I'll recommend that. There's monster recruiting and you get to pick a wife (get the DS version for best girl). IV, XI or VIII are also good starting points though I'm not a fan of VIII myself.
What's the best Monsters game for someone who doesn't give a shit about playing all of them (besides Joker 3, since I don't own it and I don't wanna hack my 3DS)? I've gotten a hankerin' for monster-catching games after the whole "no natdex" debacle with the new pokemon game.
