What people cherish about this game obviously aren't the platforming mechanics though. All about the character and visual design. The overall theme of empathy and the peculiar narrative of a camp of psychically adept children.

I just have to wonder why some characters were drawn or modeled better than others. Was it Tim or Scott's favoritism? A lot of campers got the circular eyeballs, with a line for a mouth. Scott's art didn't really translate well for some characters.

Beat the game last year. That part only took me like 3 tries (but to be fair, I 101%'d the game and had tons of health). Don't try climbing the grate, just keep jumping. The camera is a bitch, but it's not too hard.

Yeah the gameplay of Psychonauts is very bland and unengaging. Plays like every other crappy 3d platformer of the era. The comedy is what sells the game.

How? It's clearly more responsive and tighter to control. Whether or not the level variety will be as interesting as the first game remains to be seen, but so far on the basis of just gameplay footage, 2 seems like exactly what you want from a sequel to a flawed game. My only gripe with the opening level they showed is how Oleander explains what censors are to Raz, when he should already be familiar with them. Maybe it's just for the E3 demo, but I think the dialogue there could've made more sense as a direct followup to the first game.

It's not a pure platformer, it has a lot of different parts. It obviously leans very heavily into the presentation/story but that's not inherently a bad thing. The only bad bit of pure platforming is the Meat Circus, specifically I GOT YOU MR. BUNNY.

Probably not. Psychonauts was resurrected because it is a classic that got rediscovered years after the release.
Brutal Legend wasn't successful when it came out, it didn't get good reviews and no one remembers it as a classic. Brutal Legend was just bad. Worse gameplay than Psychonauts and a terrible story. Some of the character designs were cool, the cameos of muscians were cool, but that's about it.
While Psychonauts was a game where every little detail on the map had something interesting, like all sorts of obscure lore bits, Brutal Legend was empty.
It's not going to get a sequel unless Jack Black shills for it really hard on his youtube channel, but he'd have to do it for free, it would't make financial sense to pay for his shilling.

Allegedly Microsoft has this whole thing about letting devs follow their creative ambitions. I'd say Jack Black is even more relevant/of a nostalgia pull now than he was when BL was released.

I think logically they would drop the RTS at this point and realize going for a fully open world action game with metal album cover vistas is the way to the big bucks. The RTS held the game back in a lot of ways, from the experience of playing it to the action combat being less developed bc of it. A story that isn't focused around some tough damsel love interest and just about being as metal as humanly possible and the sequel could far exceed the original.

Given that Doublefine is now owned by Microsoft it's at least guaranteed to be on the Microsoft store, in which case I don't see Epic paying to keep it off every other PC platform when it still wouldn't be exclusive to their store.

I meant to say *now* in that post. It's apparently a new thing when they started acquiring all these new developers. They're idea is to buy out talent and let them do whatever, as long as it's profitable. We're still early on in this endeavor so I guess we have to see where and how it goes, but the Xbox division of the company isn't really headed by the same people who kept a rigidly strict grip on creative control years ago.
I'm hoping they actually buy out Bungie yet again if their sentiments are true. I don't see Bungie surviving as an independent and Microsoft has plenty of money to toss at the Destiny franchise to hopefully make it at least fun again. But that's unrelated.
So ultimately, no. No examples yet.

It's doubtful it will work out. These people are all about short term profits, just making as much money as possible in the short term and pulling out their stocks before the company crashes.
It would be smart for Microsoft to buy talent and have them work for them, to just do whatever they want as long as these people are working for them, even if there's a slight loss in revenue it will make sense in the long term. We've never seen any of these companies do that. Not even Valve pulled it off, they let their talent go to waste and those people end up leaving Valve to work on indie projects where they have actual creative freedom.
