What? I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. You choose whether you play more defensively or offensively. The whole point of nudoom is to maximize the violence and ferociousness of Doomguy by making him a nearly inhuman savage that couldn't be killed while crusading through Hell. It's not that the game's broken. It's that you apparently missed the point. If you choose to ignore that and play slowly anyway, that's on you. The game's clearly not designed to be played like the original Doom games.

This, Doom Eternal seems to have significantly mechanical improvements, they've streamlined the tedious and shitty progression system, and they've unfucked the art direction, not just in terms of enemies but also environmental variety (fun fact: the fag who made nuDoom so ugly was also the art director of Halo 4/5) It's a perfect sequel, all polish and improvement and no horseshit additions, except maybe the 1-ups but we'll see.

The areas are quite large and you have a lot of freedom of movement, so if you get overwhelmed by the three enemies, you can pretty much just scoot anywhere. The enemies are animated well, but that leads to them essentially doing nothing a lot of the time. I'm looking at this bit at the end and everything is spaced so far apart, and at any given time seemingly three enemies tops will be actively attacking you

They said back at QuakeCon that they agreed with the complaints about their level design, and that it was mostly a product of time constraints. One of their main goals for Eternal was improving level design. They did say they don't think the problem was that it was arena combat; they think "arena" style combat is central to the DOOM experience, but they agreed their arenas were too obvious, reptitive, and poorly implemented.

I have no fucking idea. Doom modding is more popular now than ever, if you don't like nuDoom, you can completely avoid it very easily.

But a good sequel should not just be "here's the same shit you paid for last time with some cosmetic changes". A good sequel is similar to the others, but it tends to also build on it and makes improvements or tweaks mechanics and things like that. I'm not even blaming the devs. It's hard as fuck to make a good sequel that isn't a rehash and it's easier said than done. The first new doom? Great game. The sequel? It's just the same good game again. So will it be fun? Probably, but there is zero reason to start sucking its cock as if this is some innovative sequel and paragon of video games. It's Id, so it's gonna be good. But it won't be groundbreaking shit.

I'm not sure where this is coming from. I can't remember very many arena type sections off the top of my head, you would run into enemies pretty steadily, in both cramped and open environments

You keep saying the same thing and I keep explaining why it's a lacking design. If you want to go in that direction, it needs to be embraced fully. You would not end up with similar issues in something like Serious Sam or Devil's Dagger, you would just die, because the environments, pacing and enemies are designed to support each others. And those are already games where you can jump in and shoot stuff down, so Doom's offering is mainly aesthetic

Doom 2016 was good fun, but it was pretty short and I have no interest in autistic speedruns or max difficulty room memorization, so there's little reason to replay it. For $15 it was a good buy though.
