Honestly, I think the biggest problem is their reasoning is bullshit. Nobody believes "we did it for quality" when attack animations are still slight hops and the world is barren and looking like a PS2 game, and nobody believes it's a balance thing when we've had VGC all these years and not once has Nintendo put in an actually reasonable banlist, resulting in every team in the top 8 being a variation of the same 10-12 pokemon, and furthermore when there are already tons of low tier pokemon confirmed such as non-mega Charizard or Vanilluxe.
So there are only 3 reasons I can think of for them doing this, all of which is as likely as the next
1) They want to have "Regional Dex Upgrades" as some sort of season pass 2) They want to have increasing amounts of transferrable pokemon as time goes on in games, each having their own full price tag 3) They're literally too fucking retarded to fit all the pokemon on a Switch cart.

Gamefreak back in XY had all previous and current gen 6 Pokemon done up with high poly 3D models and animations.
They added 50~ during Gen 7 and the Gen 8 Pokedex will roughly be the same, there was no reason in excluding previous generation Pokemon.

It matters a lot for the parts outside of the single player story. Collecting is now worse as the selection is far more limiting, and competitive now has far less was to make unique teams.

You do realize that by the level of quality that they are making in the size of the open world and the incredible 3D models that they are using for the pokemon and the beatifuly hand crafted NPCs if they were to make a new model for every single pokemon that exists the game overall would be over a Terabyte (A thousand Gigabytes) in size?
It's literaly imposible for the Switch cartridges or hell even for BlueRay disks for other plataforms, a game of that size and magnitude has never been made before so let the good people at GameFreak work to find a way to elevate the technology until it is possible, they are working day and night to make this possible for the fans most likely the last thing they need right now is a bunch of ungrateful "fans" screaming at their necks while they try to basicaly perform a miracle.

It's not a complete open world, the "wild area" is just one area in the game. There are still linear routes and random encounters.
