Yeah, phone versions are fine. Start with 1 and work up from there. 2 can be skipped somewhat safely, 3 is a prequel to 1 anyway. 4-6 are the ports from DS, with mobile version of 4 being the best version availible in the west, since it adds the party talk button which was removed from the original western release of the game for no reason.

Why is this series popular again? It’s literally the most generic JRPG I’ve ever seen. Even Final Fantasy mixes up the combat with stuff like ATB and Paradigm shifting; DQ is just “turn-based battle w/ abilities and spells”, the same shit you can find in thousands of RPGMaker games. What’s kept this franchise alive for so long?
