Because you need funding in a lot of cases.

There are actually a very large number of private companies.

And a lot of public companies retain a majority stake in themselves so that they cannot be unduly controlled by outside elements through the board.

Going public is usually about making money--either because your company desperately needs it (uber) or because you are cashing in.
