I also liked the optional cutscene that plays when you go back to the mansion basement after getting to that point in the story. Nah it wasn't the greatest story or anything, but that twist was one of my favorite parts of the story. It wasn't "incomprehensible" or anything. I got it. He's a real person. He was just experimented on a lot. I don't think the writer got it.

Agree. What truly gets under my skin is seeing people talking about how the new God of War is the mature one and how Kratos is now more than just an angry guy.
The first game specially did an amazing job at establishing Kratos' family. That onslaught of enemies at the end where you have to hug your family to protect them was fucking genius and a perfect way of showing Kratos' emotions through gameplay. Or later on when you have to pull the girl away and she keeps clinging on to Kratos.

i'm with you here. i played the 2018 version when it came out and loved it, so recently went back and started playing through the old games, just beat the first. from the 2018 reviews i was expecting it to just be a mindless action romp with the story just being tacked on as an excuse for all the brutality, but it's actually really well done and, in the context of the world, believable

So many people have claimed FF7 to be overrated without actually playing it, usually basing it off fangirls and fujos who claim they love it despite only playing KH and watching Advent Children. Therefore at its core FF7 is actually underrated.

Modding and everything made it worth. It never got a big thing, if anything VC (my favorite) is way more overrated than IV which actually did a lot of new shit. VC mainly acted as a prettier GTA 3.

TLOU is a great game. I didn't even play it until I played the remastered version on PS4 and I understood why people praised it so highly. It's a great game, it has some minor flaws but the relationship between Ellie and Joel is fantastic, and the setting and story is pretty solid. The game's main issues are its linearity, and the fact that each level just switches up the enemy types, going from human to zombie to human again. Rarely do you ever encounter situations where there's both humans and zombies to fight.

I do think it's overrated for what it is though, I would never consider it one of the greatest of all time games, but it's good enough to be in the top 100.

I finished it a few years ago.

HL2 is still fun to play today though. I still play through it once every 203 years and it holds up quite well.

Yeah, it just pisses me off. The entire series does a great job with showing Kratos struggling with his anger and his need to protect specific characters, as surrogates for his own lost family. And every time those are ripped away from him, that's when you get 200% mad Kratos, exactly so that the violence is justified.

This is the problem with shit like FF7 and Oot both were revolutionary masterpieces when they came out but zoomers who wern't there to experience the shift from 2D to 3D look back at them and simply cannot fathom why they were so good. They haven't aged well at all because countless games have used them for inspiration and the mechanics and gameplay elements have been continually refined and polished generation after generation. Looking back on them using now as a reference point they look unpolished, barren and clunky.

My only real issue with HL2 was that it was difficult to get some nice action going because the fights were usually short lived and the game too often stops me for the sake of showing off the physics engine.
I think the postfix of "for its time" is justified since it relies a bit too much on showing off the engine. Maybe the leaked version that forced Valve to change the entire game would've been better.

Ocarina I can vaguely agree with because it actually had revolutionary elements in regards to its gameplay and world design.

I don't know what you were expecting then. I went in expecting a great game with interesting and fun to break systems, a complex story with a lot of neat twists and amazing music. I got what I wanted.

It's fine but it's overly reliant on gimmick levels that get old after multiple playthroughs, and age is no excuse for having so much less variety than HL1 after they delayed it so many times. Regardless of quality I would still say it's just as overrated as Infinite if not more considering people still say it's the best FPS ever made.

they already started remaking it by the leak but they weren't even close to meeting their newest deadline after delaying it so many times so they used the leak as a convenient excuse to delay it again without taking a pr hit. they only remade it because what they had done before still looked like a blocky goldsrc game and they got btfo'd at e3 when carmack whipped doom 3 graphics out.

not any of those other guys but as someone who was around in 1997 the fact is that FF7 was really not that revolutionary in terms of game design. It seemed revolutionary to people who had never played a decent JRPG before, which was a lot of people. But it was really just the standard Final Fantasy formula with fancy prerendered backgrounds instead of tile-based maps and a combat engine with 3D graphics instead of 2D graphics (but combat itself played exactly the same way as the 2D games).

Probably the most "revolutionary" thing about FF7 was the sheer size of the game relative to other console games. In addition to the FMVs, FF7 also hyped up all the minigames like the bike race, fort condor, snowboarding and chocobo racing, something that the playstation's CD format made possible.

But really the illusion that FF7 was "5 games in 1" or whatever didn't really stick, even then. Some people liked some of the minigames but mostly people recognized that the FF7 take on various other genres like sports and tactics games weren't really that great and if you wanted to play a racing game you'd play a real racing game.

OOT is not as groundbreaking as people claim it was. It deserves a lot of credit for refining the movement and camera controls for a 3rd person action game (which owes a lot to Mario 64 and the N64 Analog stick anyway). But the fact is that 3D games were quite common by the time Ocarina came out and there were many more groundbreaking 3D games released in the 90s. Just one year after Ocarina you had Everquest, for example, pioneering an entirely new genre (3D MUD) that hadn't been possible before the spread of the internet (and even then Meridian 59 was technically the first 3D MUD).
