It's an action RPG that plays not much unlike Secret of Mana. It easily has the best story any RPG has ever had, imo. It's also the only game to make me cry.
I'll just say that the game is basically about you restoring Earth, all the way from the beginning, to bringing back life through plants, animals, eventually humanity and so on.
