do I get the steam version or switch version of FFVII? I keep hearing about a music bug on the console ports and the ability to rely on mods for bugfixes on PC is enticing but it seems like it'd be a comfy game to play in handheld mode

Sorry that your generation doesn't have any games that leave a big impression on you. The funny thing is that marketing and conferences were much less a part of the experience back then, none of the games I liked I learned about from commercials or marketing campaigns, they were all random games my friends had sitting around or ones I rented or picked up.
