If I remember right the “why“ is that they realized that they had the Spyro license so they took a dragon character Skylander that they already had and tweaked it enough to call it Spyro and tie it in to the game as something semi recognizable

Squizzard scared the shit out of me as a kid. I played up to world 5 when it launched and it was like 1AM. Right after that log rolling section that was also pretty scary, this thing just fuckin jumps out of the sand. This and that snowball guy were pretty frightening.
