Dragon Quest is not only more popular in the past than Banjo ever was, but it actually has a future meaning adding The Hero will be more relevant to people going forward than Banjo is

He technically represents Megami Tensei which is from 1987, one year after the first Dragon Quest in 1986. They are both amongst the first and most influential RPGs. Even if you don't count him representing Megami Tensei, Persona startsd in 1996 and has really made it's mark on the RPG genre. I think that's enough rich history for a representative to be in.

At least they bothered to give Joker his persona and those dudes from Dragon Quest get their little RPG menu. But fighting Joker with persona was already an annoying affair and I'm pretty sure the DQ characters are gonna feel gimmicky and annoying to fight against too. Fighting them is already a burden, I surely wouldn't enjoy fighting as them either. I have no clue why Sakurai thinks having so many generic animu swordsmen is great, considering sword are already annoying due to their disconnected hitbox, and then also add dumb, annoying mechanics to it like a come back mechanic, just so the thousands of 10yos who play these characters stand any chance. Charming and fun, the world is vibrant and well crafted.
Basically an old 3D platformer not unlike Mario 64 where you move between areas and are tasked to find things within those areas. The game establishes a set of simple rules early on and lets you lokose onto the world with them, and for most of the game you're not really "told" what to do so the sense of exploration and benefits reaped from finding all the things is increased.

Honestly though, I'm in the camp that thinks the game hasn't aged well because controls and visuals are VERY important for these kinds of games. That's why I'd recommend YookaLaylee over banjo these days, even though Rare obviously knew what they were doing more back then and the tone of the games are pretty different, the technological advancements have done a LOT for the genre and even I find it hard to go back and play older 3D platformers after playing newer ones.

I hope the popularity boost from Smash makes Microsoft/Rare to do a proper Banjo Threeie.

DQ was a series I never really could get into. The battle system has always been so basic and I feel like it never really evolved. That being said, I still recognize the significance it holds in that it has been on Nintendo systems since the beginning, is beloved by many, and is the other major SE IP. With FF getting in, it only makes sense to bring in representation from DQ as well as the series has rivaled FF for some time now. I probably won't play Hero much and I doubt it will inspire me to try the DQ series again but I'm happy to see it in regardless. It's a series that definitely earned that slot.

It's less about significance to Japan and more about significance to Nintendo. DQ is a series that helped make Nintendo what it is today and became an icon of several of their systems, particularly the NES where it all started.

Then we have Banjo who is once of the N64's biggest icons and was requested by fans both in Japan AND the west.

I'll admit that I hate him in Smash because it's his modern design and he's fucking obnoxious to fight but again, he holds quite a bit of significance to Nintendo. He was the mascot of Nintendo's biggest rival back in the day and since Sega closed the doors on their console department, that rivalry with Nintendo has become a friendship. OP, Dragon Quest is the most popular franchise in Japan. A main hero from the game being added as a character makes total sense. Keep Japan in mind.

I was one of those, but in my defense, there is a rather clear difference between a base roster inclusion and a paid DLC inclusion, so I assumed Banjo would get passed up for other options more relevant to the modern younger audience, as well as audiences who wouldn't already own a Switch. But part of my does suspect this could possibly be a stealth marketing step to build awareness for the brand if Microsoft's got something in mind for the bear and bird, likely on Project Scarlett.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not upset he's in after all, I was just thinking about it in a more realistic fashion. I'm honestly really happy to be wrong about this.
