People did like the gameplay. It was everything else that turned them off to it. Allow me a different example: Celeste. It's a precision platformer, about a girl with issues who climbs a mountain to get over those issues. For the people who enjoy the story it's there, but for the people who hate the story (of which there are numerous here) they can skip 100% of it and go right from gameplay segment to gameplay segment. The gameplay loop is enjoyable enough to sustain that mentality.
