Do you play any games that focus on planes?

After a few years, I've been reawakened to my love of aviation. Just got a T.16000 throttle, stick, and pedals. Currently trying to master the new F-14 module for DCS
bump
>tfw too brainlet to play flight sims
Feels bad
>combat fags
airlinefags are almost as autistic as trainfags
and your opinion of GA fags?
I load up DCS every now and then to fuck around in the Huey. Really wish DCS had an actual game attached to it though.
Ace Combat mostly
Elitist fags over shit airplanes
Come on bros. Let's just have a comfy flightsim-dad thread
I haven't done them yet, but there's a couple of A-10 campaigns
Yeah, I played around with a couple of the campaigns but the KA-50 one just flat out broke and refused to progress thanks to ED's shitty code. I can see why Falcon BMS still has a dedicated fanbase due to its dynamic campaign even though the core game is ancient
If I wanted to get into flight sims, where do I start? I assume I need a joystick also? Flying around and looking at scenery sounds like a comfy break from regular gaming
bump
Falcon 4.34 BMS
The base game is like 5 bucks on GOG (you can pirate it no one is making money off of it but distributors) and the BMS mod is free, and yet it's still the most realistic combat flight sim ever
Don't EVER fall for the DCS scam, it's extremely overpriced and was revealed to be a front for the Russian government
And yes you need a joystick
Thanks user, looks cool I'm gonna check it out. Any recommendations for a decent but affordable joystick?
Logitech 3d
It'll last forever and it's cheap as fuck
What's the most comfy dad sim
Was this at e3
Thrustmaster T.16000M. Ignore the other two repiles, that Logitech is a piece of shit, while the Thrustmaster is a legitimately good stick that still costs less than one AAA game.
is this just a /DCS ace combat/ thread or are there any xplane chads in ATR 72s here
good post, also worth noting the t16k uses magnetic sensors and not potentiometers. my 3dpro started spiking along one axis after only a couple of years
just buy fsx on steam
still decent for what it is
and ya can use a basic controller to do GA shit
>x-plane is shit
You guys excited for the new MS Flight Simulator?
>FSX
FSX is as arcadey as Ace Combat, FS2004 was the last true Flight Simulator
>not using locked spot
user I don...
Mitsubishi F-1 is an underrated and often forgotten piece of air-kino
why the fuck would you use locked spot?
that's just retarded
it looks like total ass
But that's a T-2, user...
I have such a boner for any of those 3rd gen pointy jets with short high wings. I think the Jag is my favorite, I might finally have to break down and get DCS if it ever makes it in.
Especially if it's on European Theatre in the grey and green, or 1991 Gulf War part 1 in Tan with the top wing pylon.
For me, it's the tomcat
Grey and green is gorgeous. Gulf War tan/pink is a nice color, but I don't like the late-model blunt nose that most of them had in that era.
I just got into pilot school myself
How based/fucked am i? I start 1 of september
Why are we only talk about jets? No love for prop planes?
Just watch for muzzies m8 but otherwise I hear it's not a bad life
you're fucked
it's terrible
How about one that can be used left-handed? I'm a lefty, and besides, every other game uses your left hand for movement.
lefty here
just learn to fly with your right hand.. it's much easier
Why do airlines buy737 all the time when 757 is better in everyway?
Oh, never mind, turns out that second one is ambidextrous. Removable parts can be swapped out for left- or right-handed use. Neat.
Cheaper to maintain and fuel up
Yep, T.16k is swappable, it's the only current-production ambi stick that isn't $400+ afaik. I use a pair of them for space games, left stick for strafe axes and the right one for rotation. (If you're wondering, the left one looks different because it's an older model.)
Remember, though, that what you're doing with the stick is a lot more like aim than FPS movement, and it's better to get used to flying with a right-handed stick because HOTAS throttles are all left-handed and you'll probably want to upgrade to one someday.
I play DCS mostly because the F-14 is some of the best shit flight sims have gotten in awhile. The things straight unforgiving because I'll get into dogfights with other aircraft, think I got struck by a missile but realize that my left wing is now missing because I turned too hard.
>strafe axes
"translation"
I know, but people who aren't hardcore into space games probably don't. Speaking of that, I really wish somebody would make an analog translation controller for PC, preferably one with a HOTAS-style grip, it'd make so much more sense than using a left stick and translating up and down with twist.
This is the only good thread on Yea Forums right now
Is that a Trigger skin?
Install the voiceattack mod. Having a RIO you can talk too adds so much
sorry I'm not a hardcore space guy, can you post an image of what a translation controller looks like? I always get myself confused with the twist translation action
when I use orbiter I use a single stick for both maneuver modes, but then again it's not space combat.
I gave up on flight sims for awhile when M$ stopped making Flight Simulator but once it got picked up again on Steam and quality 3rd party products became so wide spread I happily got back into it.
I'm still mad at Microsoft for gutting their support for the PC market to try to get me to buy their dumb DRM Box and now that they've lost this console generation they suddenly come crawling back to the PC market.
I've been quite happy with my 16000m hotas setup too. I might even like it better than my old Force Feedback Pro.
You can start with a simple but high quality plane like the A2A Cub or 172 in FSX or the Flaming Cliffs DLC for DCS.
This is a drawing of a real one, I think from Apollo. The Shuttle's was similar, but had a square grip instead of the oval one. It was on the left side of the pilot, and was paired with a traditional stick on the right. I'd like something like that, but with a grip similar to a HOTAS throttle, with buttons and hats and stuff on it.
I like both. Combat when I'm looking for some action and GA when I just want to chill out and maybe listen to some music.
>Falcon 4.34 BMS
I'm looking at the tutorial and my head is already spinning
youtube.com
Single-player time-skipping story-driven flight sim with AVG level when
I don't know why but I've tried like three or four different logitech attacks from several different years and I hated all of them because the response curve/spring felt so uneven. I tried a Mad Catz that I liked the feel of better but it was built like shit. I loved my old Sidewinder Precision Pro and Force Feedback Pro but they aren't supported anymore. The 16000m feels great though. It has the same smooth hall sensors as the Warthog hotas.
I shit on combat but I play DCS, and will someday try out BMS
basically if it flies I want it
As a kid I had a diecast model of the F-14 and F-5 and I've loved them both ever since.
Any WOFF anons here?
>T2
Nigger
The 16k is great so far. It feels really good. I was literally about to buy an x56 until I heard that the 16k has the same sensors as the HOTAS Warthog
UHHH THICCER
My parents bought me a diecast F-15 in bright pink when I was a kid. Dad was Army and I think that was his way of warning me the airforce is gay
I used to love playing orbiter.
I like to bind horizontal and vertical translation to the analog slew on my throttle.
>I like to bind horizontal and vertical translation to the analog slew on my throttle.
That's a pretty common solution, it's basically the default setup for Elite:Dangerous and pretty common for Star Citizen. I prefer the precision and instant forward-back response you get out of a left stick though.
Holy shit is that what orbiter looks like these days? Not played since before the 2010 version was released and i dont remember it looking that good.
so lately i've had more money than brains, and picked up some very nice joysticks
I'm thinking I'll go for picrelated when it drops below 200USD
Do you play dcs in vr? Wanting the f14 but worried about fps drop
It's only gay when you're the one receiving the missile in the tailpipe.
My brother had a plastic F15 model but It just didn't have the same appeal to me. I think the dog-toothed elevator turned me off for some reason.
No that's Space Engine. This is Orbiter.
I might consider an extra stick if I ever go back to E:D. If I manage to keep talking myself out of a Warthog stick anyway.
What sticks, guessing Virpils since those would be compatible with the F/A-18? If so I'm jealous as fuck, I never have money around to blow when they get a batch in.
Don't get a Warthog, it's just an overpriced T.16k with a fancy grip, and it wears out twice as fast and has all the same issues like the shitty center detent. If you're gonna spluge, save and get VKB/Virpil.
Ah my bad. I thought the hud looked off.
>that 30 year old boomer who still plays flight simulator 98
>war"hawk"
>paint a shark mouth on it
757 ended production
>VKB/Virpil
I'll have to look into that.
That was the game that convinced me I needed a 3d card.
it's a good guess user,
>current collection
TMWH Stick+Base+Throttle
TPR pedals
Virpil WarBRD+Base
Virpil T-50CM2
Logitech Extreme 3DPro
Logitech G Flight Throttle Quadrant (Saitek)
I add the F/A-18 Grip and I figure I never have to buy another piece of flightsim hardware again.
757 replacement won't be around until like 2029 or something
Yeah, pic related and Ace Combat. Played a shitton of IL-2 (the old one) when I was a kid with nothing but a keyboard, but recently couldn't get myself into the autistic simulators, even with a joystick, and civilian plane simulators are straight up way too boring.
Has anyone here tried the full length stick setup?
I wonder if it's worth it. I've got the space and tools to make a full geek virtual cockpit but I really wonder if it actually enhances control and ergonomics or is it just for role-playing weenies?
>simdad
you guys know that's not a meme, right?
>full length stick
like pic related
Fuck, definitely jealous now. The only really good piece of sim hardware I have is a pair of VKB pedals, still waiting on getting better sticks. I'm mostly a spacefag (hate to admit it on Yea Forums but I'm really into Star Citizen) and need something that's available in an ambi or left-handed stick with twist, so basically just the Virpil Connie or VKB Kosmo, and they're pricey and a bitch to get. (And I don't like the Connie design much anyway, waiting to see what the v.2 ends up being like.)
Yeah I'm not at all surprised. They were basically the original PC gamers.
I found the old homestead.
Please don't track me down.
Should i go to pilot school? I want to but i heard it sucks to be a airline pilot nowdays
The 300k a year days are over
That's pretty cool. I've flown over my house numerous times in X-Plane etc. but the scenery looks nothing like real life. I'm really hoping the new MSFS is what it seems like it can be so I can land a helo in my back yard and actually have it be reasonably accurate.
I've been thinking about it myself. I have it on good authority that cargo is the way to go, it doesn't have the prestige or top income potential that flying passengers does but it's a good living and a much more tolerable schedule and working conditions. I like that you could make a career out of flying regional cargo in a smaller plane like a Cessna Caravan or ATR as well, I think that's a lot more interesting than babysitting an autopilot for 10 hours over the Pacific or whatever. Only real problem is I'm not sure if I'll pass medical, I have a minor heart condition and if it got any worse I'd be fucked.
user if you're gonna borrow my airplane at least have the decency to drop a couple gallons in her when you get back
it really fucking sucks. Don't do it unless you won't be happy doing anything else
I've got ORBX scenery and it does a great job of elevations and vector roads and the general location of farms and forest are quite good but the buildings and and tiled road textures aren't accurate.
Passing medical 1 is easy af
Just dont be sick
Hey, at least I restored the paint to its original glory!
So this is a 30 yo boomer thread?
>has a "heart condition"
>want's to hand fly the graveyard shift for years on end
cargo is a hard life user.
Csrgo only flies at night
Ur gonna die early
YEP THEY JUST DON'T MAKE EM PLANES LIKE THEY USED TO. I'LL TAKE AMERICAN OVER FOREIGN PLANES ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

That's basically the conclusion I came to when I was looking into it years ago. 40k+ to get started in a job where you don't want to live making less than you would doing a trade and you have to basically win the lottery to get a good paying airline job. It's one of those dream jobs like getting into movies or something so there's far too much competition for it to be a smart career choice. On top of that Airlines are always running into financial problems and going bankrupt on you.
Wrong
Senior captains on lufthansa and klms a380 makes 300k euro a year

YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT SON?
that's the bait
Whats bait about it? They do
Yeah and for every one of those there's a couple hundred who are stuck in the right seat at some regional or flying freight in the middle of nowhere.
yes and not everybody is in that position or makes that kind of money
not even close
here's a late night screencap for a late night thread, or an event that's happening right now
...night all
"Just a broken guy with a few screws loose"
When i have completed pilot school im not going to fly regional trash
I will only fly 747s or a380 or ill quit
Longhaul is where the money is
It's minor tachycardia (I have like a 10-15bpm above average resting heart rate, but totally normal under stress) so it's not really a big deal. Doc says not to worry much about it and that it'd probably go away if I quit caffeine, but it's enough that it might DQ me from an ATP. I don't mind the graveyard shift though, it's a natural schedule for me and much preferable to the airline life where you're never flying the same hours two days in a row and often don't even know if you're going to be flying until a couple of hours before you're in the plane. I used to work 80 hour weeks on a regular basis, often without days off for three or more weeks and many 18+ hour days (including all-nighters), so I'm pretty well-prepared for a hard schedule as well.
Yeah time for bed.
g'night
If you show the same dedication to your career that you've shown for shitposting on Yea Forums, I'm sure you'll do great
Also, what I'm realistically thinking of doing is trying to get into a real university that has a good flight training program, preferably UND. That way I'm not paying ripoff private school prices and worst case scenario I graduate with a real bachelor's degree from a respectable state college and can use it to go into a non-flying line of work, maybe find something with an aircraft manufacturer or the FAA or something.
No, but I play with Track IR. The FPS doesn't drop much however if you get into a big enough furball it MIGHT drop a little when hit by a missile.
>Is that a Trigger skin?
Yes
longest two years of your life
Does Macross count?
Speaking of TrackIR, Star Citizen has spoiled me so damn bad with its Faceware shit. The eye/mouth/etc tracking stuff is a dumb gimmick, but it also does full-on TrackIR-style head tracking with nothing but a normal webcam, nothing on your head or anything, and it works amazingly well. I wish every game had something similar.
used to dream of being a pilot then realised how cripplingly expensive it is
What game would that be? I love Macross, but the last decent game I'm aware of was Ace Frontier way back on the PSP.
I'm looking forward to the update.
ahem
Take a bank loan then? Whiny fuck
ditto. I would have to choose between that and everything else.
lmao
I hope FS 2020 allows for nice addons.
I'm so ready to leave FSX and derivatives behind.
