Masuda literally says that since there are over 800 Pokémon and they are making new models, updating textures, and new animations for every single one for the new hardware they wouldn’t be able to finish by the November release date without delaying the game. This is actually something I've been wanting them to do for a while. Soft reboot with each new game, or maybe every 3 gens or so. Reset the powercreep, get to put way more resources toward each individual pokemon, don't have to worry about retroactively breaking things etc. Of course since its Gamefreak they didn't actually use the opportunity to do any of those positive things, so people are understandably mad. Imagine if every pokemon had a unique animation for every move they know, multiple idle animations that vary depending on the terrain, their and their opponent's health etc. Maybe even something crazy like procedural animations and movement when not attacking/defending. Basically Pokemon has been experimenting with different things recently. Gen 6 was Mega Evolutions which made power creep lose its fucking mind. Also Gen 6 added a new typing: Fairy. Which cucked Ice type forever to the point where it's not a thing anymore and it killed off all but like 4 Dragons in the game. Made Steel type way more popular though.
Somehow power creep got worse in Gen 7. Regional Variants were the best idea Game Freak ever had. HMs finally fucking died. Z Moves gave every pokemon in the game a tactical nuke.
Gen 8 is supposedly killing the National Dex which is fucked up. Pokemon can be kaijus now.

3D Pokemon has been killing the franchise in every single way possible since it became mainstream. When it was done for early side games like Stadium, Battle Revolution, Coloseum and XD, it was a treat. But now that it's been implemented into mainline games, including some of the most recent spin-offs like Super Mystery Dungeon/Gates to Infinity, those games suffered a major dip in quality just like X/Y, OR/AS, S/M, US/UM and those shitty Go! games.

Except all it killed was 4drag2mag, Hydreigon, and Outrage spam. The most powerful dragons are still reigning among the kings. Dragonite got Multiscale, Salamence got a disgustingly powerful Mega, and even fucking mixed stat bitchface Kommo-o who has a 4x weakness to Fairy itself got a signature Z-Move that made it relevant. Garchomp is still prominent and doesn't even need the mega to be great in battle. Fairy just shit on Dark types and Fighting types more than it did dragon. It shit on weak bitch dragons like Flygon. Not that I necessarily mind fairy, although it feels underutilized in designs.

There was realistically always going to be a point where they stopped coding in every pokemon just for the sake of balance, they've been preparing for it by introducing fewer new pokemon each gen. Can you imagine trying to balance a game with almost a thousand playable characters? There's a reason why most mon-collecting rpgs have limited rosters.
You can finish the regional Dex in USUM you mongoloid. The National Dex hasn't been mandatory but the games never locked you out from it

The animations are as lazy as ever and there’s no significant change to the formula, except for a new giant gimmick that just looks like lost potential to me. I don’t trust in “it gets better later”. B2W2 was the best game in the series period (I say this as a strong Hoenn fan). XY killed the series long term into many ways to describe. SM was decent but the cutscenes are way too frequent and theres no way to fast forward them (the world record speedrunner took an hour to reach and complete the first gym). USUM is just SM. LGPE is just firered but worse.
