Maybe I'm retarded, but I found Awakening to be very cheap. Played on Hard, and every later map would have enemies spawn and attack the same turn (where in older games they spawned at the end). So you'll play and then all of a sudden "HERE ARE LIKE
FUCKING DUDE, WHOOPS, LEFT YOUR MAGE OPEN TOO BAD." And you never knew where exactly they'd spawn so you had to just wait it out. I remember waiting on one map having my units cover a stairs till turn 30 just so I didn't have to worry about enemies spawning and killing my units. That game was fucking atrocious. Three Houses has potential so I'm hoping she's not working on it or at least doesn't throw this trash in there.

But in the end it didn't stop me from enjoying Birthright and Conquest. I got a 3DS recently for hacking purposes and one of the games I've installed was Awakening. I haven't played a FE game in like 10+ years so I've just set it to hard/classic as it apparently is similar to the old difficulties and thought to be done with it. The difficulty was alright until I became a total autist about the child characters and started my eugenics plan. Now my team is filled with meticulously crafted child super soldiers and shit's way too easy.

Basically, what this whole story is about - does Fates have a mechanic that will cause me to autistically over-engineer my future troops or is it more on the classic side of FE games?

That's exactly what I meant by "wasted potential" since this is the sort of nice backstory that are not even hinted at in the main story. The only interesting backstory is the one with the boss who killed Saizou and Kaze's father since it had an impact on whatever was going on in both stories and it played differently in Birthright and Conquest. I made Kaze kill Saizou in Conquest for the angst and it's the sort of small details that made me enjoy the story more than I should have

Fates has some room for that, but not the same as awakening. Fates kids are much weaker, the best of them being worse than the best first gens. However, reclassing works different and gives some options. Units can learn a class from their support partner in addition to their own primary and secondary classes, seals are available very early but in limited supply, reclassing doesn't reset their level, and there are more classes mostly split between the two sides.

In conquest for example, you get two heart seals early, which allow reclassing to their secondary class. Your main options for these early on are corrin, Jakob, mozu, and Elise. Corrins secondary class is whatever you choose, giving them great flexibility. Jakob can break the game just by reclassing to paladin, and his ability to learn high level skills early makes further reclassing potentially very strong. Elise can reclassing from troubadour to wyvern rider, which is not great early but becomes incredible when you get the bolt axe. Mozu joins as a villager and can reclass to Archer, with very different stats from your only other first gen bow user Niles.

Supports also require planning because S ranks build slowly and are very valuable even if the kid isn't, because they give higher pair up bonuses, new reclass sets, and unlock the child paralogues which are extra gold and exp and become much more difficult if you don't do them early enough
