Jenova was a virus colony that had the ability to copy a person's memories and emotions to aid in its shapeshifting ability, allowing it to get close to new hosts without arousing suspicion until it was too late. When injected into a weak-willed person, these cells were known to overwhelm their minds, which is why Cloud flunked the SOLDIER exam - he had the needed physique, but not the mental strength. After Cloud was rendered comatose, Zack carried him out of Nibelheim and dragged him across the world to Midgar; after making physical contact with Cloud, the cells in his body copied parts of Zack's memories, personality, and emotions, using them to fill the gaps in Cloud's broken mind. Since Zack was in love with Aerith, that transferred over to Cloud, and kicked in almost as soon as he meets her in person without him really understanding why. In truth, Cloud was in love with Tifa since childhood, even though she didn't really reciprocate until the events of the game.
