I think it goes much deeper than things like consumerism, video games, and comic books. All of those things can be enjoyed by adults within reasonable moderation and when refined to a certain level of quality. I think the bigger issue is democracy itself. Coupled with the computer age, it's linked everyone to everyone else and at all times, and it's got people overwhelmed and overstimulated as a result, so they push off making important life decisions for one more year because there are so many other things on their radar that they feel they have to keep up on in order to remain integrated in the hypersocialized media machine that has been grafted on everyone's minds over the years. They do this again, and again, and again, until people are 30 and they realize they have done nothing with themselves yet.

Problem with black (and other minority) characters is that they are meant to serve as positive examples of those kinds of people. Since AAA games have more minorities in them now, you would expect the range of characterizations to widen a bit. After all, if you have more than one of a specific minority in your game you can experiment a bit more with writing because it no longer looks like you are making a statement about that group in particular. This hasn't happened, though.

People don't think about it. when they making proper characters. Look at Borderlands 2. There was a very clear explicit intent to make almost every character LGBT. That is quite clearly forced. In Life is Strange, Ms Grant is hugely fat. She's nice, but also naive. At the start of the game, she presents you with a petition to sign. One to ban the use of security cameras in the school. You have a choice whether or not you want to sign it. This is an interesting choice, because just earlier you witnessed a girl get shot by a boy in the woman's bathroom. Now, because of the game's rewind time gimmick, you undo the incident and save the girl. However, that still doesn't help the fact that had the shooting actually taken place, the shooter would have gotten away with it. As there would be no evidence of his involvement. No witnesses that he entered the women's bathroom at that time. Also, the girl he shoots shouldn't even be at the school during that time. So you pretty much have a shooter and a trespasser, and they both get away.
Point is, Ms Grant is missguided. She means well, but the school does need cameras on the premises. Also, she seems to have a rather ideal look at the history of Native American relationships.
Principal Wells is another well meaning black character. But he overlooks the behavior of certain students, because they pay the school a shitton of money. His inattention is what allows the shooter kid to get away. he's more concerned about the financial standing of the school than the safety of the students. Even allowing them to hold a ridiculously dangerous party at the school's pool. He's also a drunk. At one point in the game, you catch him drinking and rambling on campus. If he catches you sneaking out at night, he tells you to go back to bed, but doesn't really enforce it. So you just sneak around him anyway.
