Their decision to fund the game was completely apolitical at the time.
But sure, it's only a simple coincidence that an enormous amount of backers immediately, IMMEDIATELY voiced extreme disapproval of the EGS exclusivity.

I'm a huge fan of Shenmue, but didn't pledge the Kickstarter. Even so, I feel bad for the fans who did. It is scummy to promise a simple thing and then pull the rug out from under. Unlike canceling a Vita or Wii U version, which I can understand might end up being expensive, it's a digital platform. I would guess Deep Silver just wanted easy money since they're facing trouble.
