Good dodging, armour and potions. Iron skin is great early on and cheap to make, adds 8 defence. I assume you're dying to bosses? It's worth constructing an area out of platforms to battle them, and area thats easy to move around in all directions.

Expert mode is better when played with friends.

It's a 2D action platformer so it's quick and easy to play and come back. The progression just feels really nice and everything builds on each other. Then there's secret stuff that surprises you if you've never seen it before.

If you keep restarting from the beginning each time you play it, then that's your problem.
You need to continue progressing forward. The game constantly builds upon itself.

Expert does indeed get harder later on. I remember even getting stuck on expert skeletron when expert mode first came out. Those skull projectiles are annoying.

early game fun is about exploring fuckhuge caverns and trying to find all the goodies
mid-game is about gearing up and improving your town (or building more commieblocks) and tackling harder areas
late-game is about fucking shit about and trying to not get fucked up

expert is basically "farm more" mode desu
some of the boss changes were interesting like Eye's pattern changing, but a lot of them were underwhelming gearchecks

comfy 2d exploration with crafting and boss hunting. it can start a bit slow if you don't know how to abuse block placement or what to bring when caving like ropes. lategame you'll be flying around everywhere though

Not cancelled but there isn't much developed on it. I'd imagine terraria otherworld before IT got cancelled was supposed to be a buffer inbetween it and 2 so it wouldn't feel like its been so long. Maybe that's why they're still updating the first game, so they can keep interest.

There was that brief period where Red, the original dev, seceded from the rest of the dev team to go and try wrangling that Otherworld mess together for a duration of a couple Terraria patches, but he came back eventually.

Nobody else from the core Terraria development team has ever stopped working on Terraria since.

Issue I have with deathmode Calamity is that they nerf a good amount of bosses for having "cheap hits" on certain attacks, then you get later bosses like Yharon who remains poorly designed compared to DoG and SCal. Imagine a Duke Fishron type boss with dozens of high damage projectiles raining down on you constantly the entire fight with little to no time to react to, where getting hit 2 times is usually enough to die. At least for SCal you know you're in a bullet hell phase, and the projectiles that do explode off screen you see head past you so you can anticipate it.

HERO used to be one of the biggest Terraria youtubers. However, when people began pointing out his lack of understanding of BASIC MECHANICS AND PROGRESSION in his pre-1.2 release stream, it became incredibly clear just how much of an idiot he was - and he started breaking down real hard because of some light jabs to the point that he spent 2 hours ranting, insulting the community, etc.

Game is poorly optimized too. I was also hopeful it would be a truly great game like Terraria, but after the mechs update I can see they just don't really give a shit anymore. Nothing screams fun like grinding for mech parts, which are supposed to be coded to drop new parts more than the same parts, but the code doesn't work so you end up spending an entire night grinding mech parts but not getting any new drops. And it still hasn't changed.

The quests are boring and unimaginative fetch and escort missions. The end game content consists of lame boss fights with minor upgrades to your gear at best. This game basically requires mods to keep you coming back. The exploration and progression isn't as consistently rewarding as in Terraria
