My local arcade has one of the beat em ups. No idea of the name, it's in Japanse, but it seems to more or less follow the plot of the show. You can play as any of the main 5 scouts, you have special attacks with anime cut-ins that you can power up by finding crystals. Its actually pretty good, though stupid hard and kind of overly simplistic in that old-school brawler sort of way.

Sally, Akko-chan. Those were actual magical girls though, i.e. solving problems with magic rather than using transformations to fight. That traces more to properties like Cutie Honey, Super Sentai and, only 2 years before, Bishoujo Kamen Poitrine (which was basically the template for Sailor Moon, there was even a proto-Chibi Moon in there). What Sailor Moon did do though is popularizing of combat as a means of dramatization in magical girl shows.

One of the cool things about it is that the game seems to keep track of which characters get picked the most and ranks them in order of popularity, which it displays in the attract mode. The fun part is that they seem to have custom dialogue and portraits for the characters with the current most popular lording it over the least. Like I said, it's in Japanese so I cant tell for sure what they are saying but it's pretty cute.

The 90's anime is the only really worthwhile thing to watch, mostly because a lot of it was directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, who went on to make Revolutionary Girl Utena and that weird show about the lesbian bears whose name I can never remember.
