The only thing I didn't like about Lulua was the lack of balance in the battle system, you're given so many options it becomes way too easy unless you avoid using some mechanics on purpose. Shame since it's a really good turn-based battle system and it would be great to see it in a more difficult game.

More complex alchemy mechanics. The tetris shit in mysterious was cool even if everything else about it was boring.
Less ability to break the system, Arland games were especially bad at that and Lulua avoids it for the first half of the game but then goes full retard later.
Maybe not time limits in general but putting the true ending on a time limit would be enough motivation for me.

Yeah. Like early on tell the player that it's important that they find the macguffin/make the thing/beat the baddie "before it's too late" but never force a time limit. However, if you take too long, you get a worse ending that reflects it.
