The problem isn't the switch case, it's that the compiler can't simplify string comparison. It's an O(n) comparison, while a numerical (enum) comparison is o(1). Regardless of code readability, which obviously supports using switch case vs if/else statements, the real problem is that he does string comparisons, presumably all over his code, which is why it runs like shit.

Doing it for every case to have a unique string is so stupid. You can also just have a single bitmap for the 3 cases, and do a simple logic check on it to determine output string.

Not to mention that the real way to handle this kind of situation is to not even use an "if/else" statement but to generate objects that can do the job that the if/else is making them do. For example, instead of writing a "state", you'd make an object of an abstract class of like, BaseWitnessState, which would hopefully be attached to some kind of dictionary of witnessed states.
So you'd set this.witnessed = 'blablabla', you'd instead do like, this.witness_state = witness_state_factory.produce_witness_state(WitnessStates.Weapon | WitnessStates.Insanity)
This way, you can decouple the base logic (that would run the if/else code) from the witness handling code.
In short, shut the fuck up

I'm confident that he has no idea what half of his code does at this point, which is a result of copy pasting different components and copying tutorials found on the internet.
