Are you stupid or did you not play FF7? Materia system had over 70 different materia. You could come up with interesting combinations which completely changed how battles would play out, most materia had its own interesting spell animations, materia also gave your characters stat boosts, you leveled them just by playing and when you leveled them to max they'd birth another materia, meaning you could share really rare materia if you grinded enough for it.

Nier Automata had maybe 20 chips max, you had to get lucky on drops and couldn't level them up without taking up more chip slot space. Majority of the chips didn't add any interesting gameplay options.

I'm fine with them adding stuff like giving the cloak guys a bigger role and making them more menacing/impactful. I was also fine with them giving Biggs Wedge and Jessie bigger roles and expanding Midgar, which they have clearly done.
The problem is: aeristh's scene showed that they have completely ballsed up her characterisation from the original game. It doesn't fit at all, the original would never act like that. A big problem with the FF7 compilation stuff was it fucking up the characters of all of the various party members, and that was the most important thing I was looking out for. We hadn't seen enough Cloud to know if he was going to be mopey sad AC Cloud or original Cloud, and Barret was, eh, close enough so I had some hope, but they've definitely fucked up Aeristh and that means they've probably fucked up Tifa and Cloud, too, since they're the ones who had characters that could be easily fucked up and which were important enough to the story for it to really matter.
combine that with the fact that they've changed Cloud's voice actor to(I think, at least he definitely sounds like him) the guy who did Noctis and we're 100% getting Insufferable Mope Cloud, which means we're also getting Basically Yuna Aeristh and Generic Spunky Tifa.

But Aerith and Barret's designs aren't the same as AC, they have some slight differences so maybe Tifa will too

And before you say "but MUH COMMAND/SUPPORT/INDEPENDENT MATERIA!", note that most of that is done via prep time BEFORE the battle, not during it and most of it only became available like 2/3rd into the original game, so this will be better.

I think you read my post and then heard the opposite of what I wrote. I do not want to hear some cinematic hollywood orchestra over my 20-year-old game memories. I have that orchestral music already from several fantastic albums, ranging from full orchestras, piano solos, heavy metal and electronica. Nobuo Uematsu created absolutely phenomenal set-pieces that translated extremely well into all kinds of musical styles. I love it.

But I want my midi files when I play FF7. Without the midi files, I feel like it's removed HALF THE REASON the Final Fantasy series was so fucking good. It's still Nobuo Uematsu's work, but it lost a lot, and I mean a lot, of his direct influence when you have 90 people in some orchestral pit trying to follow direction and swells and what not. It's a video game, and I want my midi files. I won't get them with this remake. I won't play this remake.

Those guys are regular people though, Nibelheim citizens, just given a lethal dose of mako and Jenova cells. They can't fly or turn into dust.

I'd wager this scene and those creatures are from some kind of dream or nightmare Cloud is having. Probably after Aeris is kidnapped by the Turks. Her grabbing his hand and begging for help never happens and doesn't really have a logical place it could fit this early story wise.
