How would Yea Forums modernize Earthbound/Mother 3?

I played Earthbound a couple years after it was released so I might be biased, but I recently played it again and it was still fun. The only thing I think about sometimes is what a real-time combat version of it would be like.
What would you use to fill all the empty space then? I know the game is atmospheric but not enough for the long walks everywhere stand up on their own IMO.
